Or ministers can spend money on teams to do it properly and not expect the public to do their job.
It’s not what you know. It’s what you can prove, Jake
And what will that achieve if law enforcement don’t have the resources to do anything about it?
Our local authority got a 3-month closure order on a shop selling counterfeit tobacco (and that was just what they could objectively pin on them, doubtless there’s more). They did a post explaining some of the issues which boiled down to really limited powers. The closure order didn’t even apply to the business, they could only issue an order forbidding anyone entering that shop unit for 3 months, but that business could just go trade in another unit. And that order took them ages to get as they first had to issue several warnings etc.
They know exactly what shops are dodgy, they don’t need our help, but their hands are tied.
Will be pointless. Reported a shop for selling fake rolling papers to trading standards last year (they literally have a qr code you can scan to prove they’re authentic – which was fake). Heard nothing back lol
They are pretty easy to spot, they have Barber Shop written on them
They all take cash only
They’re going to get so many reports that genuine cases will be lost in the noise with only 75 officers or whatever it was to comb through them. Just giving people the illusion of being listened to.
I’m no grass, but there’s at least 15-20 vape/barber shops on my high street alone! They’re everywhere. They shouldn’t need members of the public to point that out.
People see them and presume they’re dodgy. And sure, maybe they are but at this point it’s a guess.
Some people come across as dodgy while being perfectly legit.
I live in Nottingham. In the past 5 years about 5-6 barbershops have opened up in the centre, most of which are permanently empty. Outside of the centre I know of another handful which are also regularly empty.
Cash only. Expensive car sat out front.
This could lead to a lot of bad feelings. Local intelligence is an oxymoron.
They don’t care about what shenanigans are going on in the background, they want haircuts without paying ripoff high street prices.
Bro I called the police when a wanted rapist who I’d seen on crimestoppers was stealing a bike in the centre of town. They could not have given fewer shits.
You leave my barber alone, I don’t care if he’s shady, he does a good job.
A Barber shop on the outskirts of town was open at midnight on Xmas day by me . Who gets their hair cut at them days and time ?
But don’t report the dodgy builders who only take cash or the politicians who take money from wealthy donors.
Put more police on the streets? Police walking around will notice more.
Thr owners have British passports and often are reforms idea of British. Where are you deporting them to genius? Nottingham?
This is 100% going to lead to constant false reports of businesses owned by BAME people.
Reform can’t even keep a tidy house …. bribes, bungles and russian money
Is this a job for those new councillors that were elected recently?
My local shop is streaming via IPTV football on a big screen and other sports all day long on an illegal stream, so its not exactly difficult to use that as an excuse to snoop around.
If I call the police and say, “i think this vape shop and that mini market are fronts” then I could run the risk of wasting police time. I have absolutely zero tangible evidence, how would i?
They are both almost always empty other than the shop keeper and his mate, and I think it’s pretty obvious what’s going on, but all that means is that it’s obvious enough that the police should work with HMRC to get on top of it
Yes they usually sell vapes, don’t need to public to tell you that, police can find them by,.shock horror, patrolling the streets
The councils as well, seem to be allowing these shops to open?
Really, is the state of British policing that bad, short of replacing their shiny signs with money laundering operations centre how much more help do the police need
No,,, not a fuck am I snitching.. im not even English and I know that’s not how is works bruuuv
Possibly the worst thing the Tories did was cutting police numbers.
All this will cause is an influx of simpletons reporting every corner shop and yurkish barbers they can find and overwhelming authorities. Expect an apology and the public being asked to stop by this same muppet soon.
I live in a town where the high street consists of Turkish barbershops, vape shops, phone case shops, and “bargain” stores.
Yes, they’re dodgy. A mate of mine manages a pub a few doors down from one of them and he tells me they’re always dealing drugs out the back. Owners pull up in brand new Mercedes’ every morning etc.
The police know. Everyone knows.
It was only about twelve to eighteen months ago that this was considered a baseless, racist conspiracy theory by just about the entire centre to left political spectrum. Funny how things change!
I don’t know if barber shop around my place are dodgy but close to my flat they are people always in front of it doing drugs deal.
I noticed a few weird things happening in the barbershop I went to years ago. Nothing massively out of the ordinary, but enough to notice. Things like off-looking blokes going into the back to drop parcels off (didn’t have hi-vis or a recognisable uniform).
During COVID, the owner seemed furious that officers had come round to check he was maintaining distancing, etc. He was also very quick to get rid of staff who’d only been with him a few weeks, with very little explanation.
About 3 years ago, he just stopped turning up to the shop, and he was apparently working out of his brother’s shop. When I went to the shop because it was close to work, and I generally had a good relationship with him, he had basically no explanation for why he’d left his shop. Fast forward about a year, and he’s taken his family to live in Oman.
A few of the lads still working in his shop (now owned by his brother) had a few theories ranging from tax evasion to speaking to underage girls, but no one could prove anything, and I suspect there was basically no evidence.
Pretty sure they can google it and HMRC can do the investigations.
There’s a barber on our high street that everyone says is all about money laundering, it’s a frequent talking point (along with the mini mart that’s been raided at least 3 times to my knowledge).
Prime location, but never more than 2 or 3 customers a day, the barber is more often than not sat outside scrolling his phone. Nowhere near enough income from that to cover town centre rent.
An easy way to report these places is a good Idea
I live in area of Scotland that is fucking inundated with these things. 3 have opened then closed then opened across the street under a different name. dodgy af. open secret how common cannabis is sold in those things
There’s one of those barber shops near me. They keep cutting each others hair, everyday, with fancy cars upfront.
I’m sorry but the people who know these shops are dodgy are not gonna report them lol. I have a friend who goes to one of these shops and buys whatever from them, why tf would they report the shop???
When you have 15 “convenience” stores on a one mile stretch of road. They aren’t making a profit selling “groceries”
I mean.
OK.
But what they are allegedly doing is already illegal, and you presume the local police know which shops are dodgy.
So..
Just get on with it without getting the public involved?
Who’s gonna rat out the guy who sells them their cigs at £5 a pack?
I really hope the local place I like isn’t involved. After reading training materiald about the dangers of it at work, it’d be really nauseating know I’d been contributing to modern slavery, money laundering or human frigging trafficking just by going for a haircut.
After almost 2 years in power is this really the only thing they can do about this? Is this government even serious?
Fund the policy, send them to investigate these places, prosecute.
But Labour seems too fractured, some part of the party just doesn’t want that.
Nah. They do a decent haircut. Why don’t you do your jobs? I’m not doing it for you.
