      As much as I believe that the European Parliament should have more pressing matters to work on right now, I still think this is a building block for European unity, as small and symbolic as it is.

      Some people asked why not call it knighthood, but there’s a good reason for that. Knighthoods are given out by kings.

      And they gave one of them to the OVP Chancellor who made a government coalition with Haider’s FPO in the late 90s, the first who opened the door to the far right in government coalitions with EPP.

      We’ll be able to give Trump a medal as part of some future negotiations.

      One should posthumously be awarded to my man Otto von Habsburg. President of the Paneuropean Union, decades-long serving Member of EU Parliament, and overall one of the great men that built the European Union, with passion commitment and hard work.

      Honestly, I hope they stick to honoring people like that Ukrainian soldier rather than the usual parade of career politicians and corporate lobbyists. A symbolic gesture like this is fine in theory, but if it just becomes another networking tool for the elite, it’ll lose any real meaning. Let’s see if they actually have the guts to award it to the people who sacrifice everything, not just the ones who sign the papers.

      During WW2 the UK rewarded orders of merit to entire populations e.g Malta for their heroism in the face of attack. I think the Ukranian people, state and armed forces should each be rewarded it before anyone else.

      Why is Wolfgang Schüssel getting one he was the leader of one of the most corrupt governments Austria ever had? And he teamed up with the FPÖ one of the most EU sceptical party’s in Austria

      Zelensky should get one.

      Even though Ukraine isn’t yet an european country, he made us all come together for them.

      Not convinced by that design. Can you imagine the medal of honor or victoria cross featuring their national flags as the centerpiece?
