I honestly don’t see how you move on from this, it is a personal tragedy that dwarfs anything most people will ever experience

So sad. I was thinking how something like this happened. Likely they can’t swim?

This poor family. Three beautiful young women gone and the heartbreak and pain in their father’s words is palpable. RIP.

Had a horrible feeling the women were sisters after hearing they were related.. 3 young lives lost is tragic enough, but 3 young sisters? Can’t even imagine the pain the family is in right now..

Very tragic, and worth beginning with what isn’t known. Police have ruled out foul play or third-party involvement, and there is no confirmed public explanation for how three sisters ended up in the sea off Brighton.

The only vaguely credible theory floated by several outlets is very tragic misadventure – specifically visitors unfamiliar with a beach that locals tend to read instinctively.

Brighton’s shore has a peculiar deceitfulness to it. To the uninitiated eye, the central pebble beach can look merely picturesque, postcard England with gulls and chips, but around the pier the steep shingle shelf is notorious.

One step, then another, and what looked like harmless paddling can suddenly become deep water, with waves dragging hard against shifting pebbles beneath your feet. The sea, especially in Britain, has a habit of punishing confidence and ignorance in equal measure.

Locals know the beach is less a sandy welcome mat than a sulky, beautiful brute – steep underfoot, cold even in warmth, and occasionally treacherous in ways tourists don’t expect.

That is emphatically not an explanation of what happened here, only the broadest possible context for why “misadventure” is among the theories being discussed. Very very sad and tragic.

I can’t begin to imagine this family’s pain. My heart goes out to them. Truly heartbreaking.

    10. It’s awful when parent loss 1 child let alone 3

Sadly people underestimate dangers of sea , lakes , ice . Specially if you not brought up around them

Reminds me of that awful case on a farm a good few years back where the Dad and his two sons perished in the septic tank due to fumes as one by one they tried to save the other one. Tragic.

To call this a mere tragedy is to minimise the magnitude of what’s happened to this family. I’m truly heartbroken.

It’s just so heartbreaking. How do you move on after loss like this? I’m so sorry for the family.

As a father of three girls this absolutely devastated me. Sending my love to their family.

Grew up in Brighton, there is a part of the sea bed known locally as ‘The Shelf’, (or was, I moved away a few years ago) where the sea bed which is stepped anyway, suddenly disappears into a sharp perpendicular drop of several feet.

We were always warned to mind ‘The Shelf’, continually when out on the beach with family or friends.

It comes out of nowhere or feels that it does even though I was very familiar with it. I still had a few nasty sea swallowing experiences with it when I misjudged it & suddenly disappeared under water.

I suspect they came across ‘The Shelf’. There’s often strong currents at that spot as well which you can’t always see from the shore so it all looks calm and safe.

      RIP

This is very odd. I don’t think they went into that water out of their own choice. Why would they risk going into the water at that time when the water is so cold? Black women generally don’t like getting their hair wet especially in that cold filthy water . They could have been killed and then dumped into the water after. Police need to investigate and check their call logs and cctv . It’s very odd

Am I the only one who thinks Something is sus … they’re not young teenagers. They are all in their 30s… something is weird here

Absolute tragedy – They look like they were beautiful women.

I was saddened and angry by the awful racist “ boat people” comments at the first news of this incident .

Sometimes certain folks in this country make me feel ashamed to be British

Earlier news reports stated that they were found fully clothed and had attended a student event at a nightclub. Given they were 36, 32 and 31 years old respectively, feels slightly implausible that they’d travelled to Brighton from London to attend a student night, let alone getting intoxicated or events unfolding in such a way that one or all of them thought getting in the sea at 5:45am was a good idea.

      Very odd story.

It must be heartbreaking enough to outlive one of your children. But three at once? I can’t imagine the pain the family is going through 💔

Oh this is so sad. Heartbreaking for the family and friends.

Unbearably sad. What a horrible tragedy – they look like remarkable young women

    23. TrippyHippocampus on

Absolutely devastating news. My heart goes out to their family. The grief from losing multiple loved ones so suddenly is a specific type of hell on earth… I really hope their relatives and friends can lean on each other to get through this.
