And this won’t change as long as we keep chasing after stupid metrics like GDP.

Wow, who would have thought that refusing to modernize your industry would end up biting you in the ass. Instead of moving into the future, we do everything to go back into the last century.

Well, running a shifting economy is hard and CDU is a bunch of corrupt, incompetent stooges so hardly a surprise. And the next ones are going to be even more corrupt and more incompetent, but clad in blue and hiding it by blaming Ausländer… Hooray!

Well, as long as Germany keeps getting squeezed for ever larger contributions to EU programs, nothing is going to change. And the irony is that if the German economy seriously implodes, the entire EU project will suffer massively, because there wont be a major net contributor left to finance so much of the system.

Just look at the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF). Despite Germany currently facing one of the weakest economic performances among major EU economies, it received far less funding than many other member states. Germany received only around €28 billion from the RRF (roughly 0.7% of its GDP). Meanwhile, Spain received about €69.5 billion, equivalent to roughly 5.6% of its pre-crisis GDP. Italy and even France also received substantially more.

Germany is expected to shoulder the largest financial burden in the EU while receiving comparatively little support in return, even during periods of economic stagnation and industrial decline.

Just look at this beautiful chart: [https://www.reuters.com/graphics/EUROPE-RECOVERY%20FUNDS/movababydpa/chart.png](https://www.reuters.com/graphics/EUROPE-RECOVERY%20FUNDS/movababydpa/chart.png)

Unfortunately Germany is a country that can’t stop itself from making bad choices.
      Some examples:
      1. Short sighted energy policy crippling their economy
      2. Over reliance on automotive industry that will probably end like Nokia’s phone division
      3. Terrible immigration policies
      4. Poor digital infrastructure
      5. Underinvestment in infrastructure
      6. Defending Israel while they commit genocide

Can anyone here give some examples of good decisions they made in the last 20 years?

No shit, they invited in hoards of asylum seekers and low skilled immigrant workers who are reliant on the state, and lost access to cheap energy to support their industrial base. On top of that, Chinese manufacturers have caught up in quality for some of Germany’s core industries, and Germany has failed to pivot into new industries. They could easily enter some form of deindustrialisation like what Britain experienced.

A weak Germany is not in the interest of Europe. I know many people in this sub are kinda rubbing their hands and expressing “Schadenfreude” (as Germans would say) – yet the EU will basically crumble if Germany gets in serious economic trouble. That being said, I am convinced that Germany will recover eventually. It always takes a long time to make changes but once they are in place it will get better. Germany has shown over and over again that they can turn things around. And also don’t forget there is a stereotype that Germans love to complain about everything – especially about their own situation and country. So there is a good chance that the situation is not as bad as many people think and say.

As long as the War in Ukraine keeps going on with corresponding EU sanctions, there will be economic difficulties. Throw in Trumpenomics and conflict in the Gulf – it gets worse.

I’m enjoying watching what’s happening to rhe German economy as too many have been crowing about the UK struggles without realising that much of Western Europe has similar or even worse problems with their economies.

I feel the challenges of the auto industry in Germany give insight into other industrial areas.

The hard problem here, fix the auto industry to be competitive against China auto, this is also the impossible problem. German automakers are making some pretty good EVs now, but they can’t match the great low price EVs from Chinese (and China has the best high end EVs too). Germany lost their Chinese export market for expensive top end gas vehicles. That was a core strength for decades for them (as the Chinese economy grew) until recently. Now German auto can’t grow by exporting; the US is still a good market for them but we are doing poorly economically too. So BMW etc has gone and made a new generation of great EVs with performance, style, panache, technology. The question is will the world buy them, will they be price competitive. That’s still an open question.

If the auto industry stagnates or doesn’t show worldwide export growth, it will have to shrink or get increasing subsidies. I’d be worried. I see the same challenges in the US auto industry.

      So

Germany can start by working towards better tumble dryers. Theirs are way inferior to American ones.

I know what would help, the reactivation of the wealthtax which puts over 130 billion € into the state *annually without hurting anyone. Instead the CDU is trying to make every middle class worker poor

    19. CalligrapherEast2344 on

The biggest issue Germany have is their Chancellor has no imagination. He formed a government at a time when Germany’s previous fiscal conservatism basically gave him a free hit to inject 500 BILLION euros in the economy.

But Merz has no real vision for the country, how to innovate or make things better.

So this spending spree will boost the GDP numbers slightly in the short term, but will do very little in addressing Berlin’s structural issues.

    20. Because we’re still busy trying to save another billion or two by taking away from the poorest of the poor, while we refuse to invest in the future or really anything at all.

The US Europe’s long standing “Allie” causing their Germany’s downfall why am I not surprised. In my opinion the German people are as much too blame for this as the government, they are incredibly shortsighted and rigid. Don’t want to sound like downer but Germany regaining its former position in the global economy is very unlikely at this point. China has over taken many German industries and will continue to overtake more because of loose labor laws, cheaper energy, more innovation and subsidies from the Government that Germany can’t provide to its companies. Germany will have to do a lot of cost cutting to bring its economy back on track but no one will be willing to take the hurt that will come with it, especially the older generation.

    22. Maybe the Germans can start working and stop slacking off? Isn’t that how they told us it works?

Germany just needs to import some extra workforce from africa and the ME, alongside building some extra reliable windturbines and solar parks.

Time to increase pensions and import more immigrants that won’t pay into the system that will fix the situation
