La Cattedrale di Colonia non è solo un capolavoro dell’architettura gotica, ma una testimonianza di secoli di resistenza e precisione. Ogni singola riga sembra aver scritto la propria storia nel cielo.

Leaving aside the purpleness of that particular prose, the story those lines write makes Berlin-Brandenburg Airport look like a stunning success.

It’s not centuries of “endurance and precision”, it’s centuries of delays and changing plans, including the addition of a grandiose west front that was basically one archbishop’s vanity project. It took so long that the cathedral was only half-built when Gothic architecture went out of fashion and the money dried up. It was left like that for 300 years, with a crane still standing, a barely usable derelict construction site.

It wasn’t until the late 19th century, when Gothic was back in style and people were romanticising the past, that construction restarted, a ridiculously expensive project that even with the modern technology then available took another 20 years to complete and cost the equivalent of a billion euros, about two or three times the original estimate.

As impressive as the finished construction is, what it is testament to is the fact that construction projects being delivered massively late and massively overbudget are not a new thing. Especially when egotistical politicians get involved.

We also went there last month and were left speechless by the beauty of it. Also attended afternoon mass. Such a great experience.

I decided to create a short video on it

Every time I see pictures of the Dom, it makes me want to play Dark Souls or wh40k.
