I actually think he’s objectively right about most of it, as regards his business.

A shame the EU, EU institutions, our goverment and local institutions are not run like this, this would actually make the EU and Luxembourg great again.

Honestly he‘s hundert percent right. I remember when I was at Amazon that 80% of my peers did not do shit in Home Office. It was super easy if you ensured reaching your targets on bare minimum.
But! I also see similar behavior in the office today. Tons of useless meetings, with 10+ people discussing for 2h with no clear impact our outcome as everyone is „so busy“ and is writing emails during the damn boring meeting.

All these old people will be very surprised when they have no choice but to put Gen X into team lead positions. It’s time for THEM to change their attitude. Take my boss for example, he only turned 30 the other day and he’s never in the office before 10 am, “connects with people” in the office until like lunch break and is like “oh ooops I have a meeting [5 min after the meeting started] and we are only in the office once per week!

All of these comments “agreeing” with this asshole, the corporate bots are working overtime today to make sure we don’t rebel against our workplace

I think most of who have worked corporate resonate strongly with the meetings and excessive process comments. We should fight this encroachment in almost every company – a rare time when upper management and workers agree 🙂
I am mostly onboard with his WfH views. I see myself being less productive when WfH, especially for prolonged periods. Not because I am lazy or m not doing enough hours in the home office, but because there is an intangible but real benefit to productivity and motivation when you are co-located with those you work closest with. YMMV, of course!

I feel the thing is this has little to do with the remote work per se, but rather highlights the problem of the constant meeting culture and lack of accountability in these companies
Nobody wants to take decision, so you set up a meeting after another so that there is one “group” that can be blamed for the decision. Which multiplies the useless meetings, which obviously creates situations where people just do everything else except listening
So I don’t think he’s 100% wrong but if he blames remote work (which I don’t think he does explicitly in the audio) the he just misses the cause of the issue
Edit: The obvious connection between remote work and the culture issue is that the “effort barrier” of setting meetings has been completely removed (which obviously started way before COVID and remote work, but they have marked the definitive shift to online meetings)

I appreciate WFH more in the winter than the summer. Driving is easier and a bit less stressful and the office is not as busy as most people are taking big chunks of the holidays during summer also. At least that’s my experience.

Working from home 4 days a week. Seems that the culture the speaker works in is the problem.
I never have te problem of people not showing up in a call. Unnecessary meetings can be declined. To be productive at the office I have to work with headphones.
This is bull from a manager who talks all day and thinks his reality is the only one.

Remote work in Luxembourg is caped by the crazy amount of non resident workers that are limited for fiscal reasons.

He is not screaming, I heard the F word once , and a good Damm too but he is right. A lot of people use remote working for basically not work or at least work considerably less and indeed it hurts productivity and efficiency a lot. I think people do not realise that he is addressing a room of executives no the simple little hands that work for an average salary, but rather he is talking to the decision makers, the executive’s representatives, chiefs of division , at those levels you simply are not allowed to have much of a life, work weekends , holidays (is normal) calls with several time zones, you need to live with your phone and pc in perfect symbiosis. At that level of pay grade it is expected. So to me that’s perfectly normal.

I work from home full time, I’m always available during business hours.
This is a rich twat who thinks he’s more important than air.
Homework for some is a lifesaver, I get beyond socially exhausted from the (open) office environment; I happily took a pay-cut when I switched jobs to transition into guaranteed remote work. I work better, feel better and isn’t that all that matters?

To be fair I’ve also experienced the “Friday WFH but not answering” and it’s infuriating. Especially to people actually working.
He’s also right regarding meetings, committees and being 10% more efficient. He’s speaking to managers, regular employees aren’t the target here. People making 5 figures ain’t responsible for this sh*t.

OK, a lot to unpack here.
1 – On the behaviour during meetings he is totally right – It’s just disrespectful.
2 – This is not new – I think it happened one or two years ago, I don’t remember exactly, when senior people were ordered back to the office full time – As you can imagine some didn’t like it, and this was directed to them, not the normal employees (although the punishment of going back to the office trickled down).
3 – In my opinion if someone is not productive working from home on fridays, they will also not be productive in the office, they will just be acting. The problem is the lazy person, not the day of the week itself. I know companies which have “suggestions” of not scheduling meetings on fridays if possible, which is realistic, everyone is already zoned out by then.
4 – It’s an investment bank. Work hours are brutal, always have been – But at the same time you’ve always had entire teams EXPECTED to work from anywhere, at all times, which is basically an informally work from home arrangement, and it always worked. Again, the problem seems more like a management/HR thing. Not to mention that just like in any other huge multinational, you will go to the office to talk via teams with someone in London, Hong Kong, Dubai, or whatever, so it’s not like you actually need to be in this place or the other to make it work.
5 – Not really comparable to Lux reality, I think, here I think the main impact is more bc of the bureaucratic restrictions.
