5 years after taking a life is absolutely ridiculous in my opinion.

Especially considering it seems like he went searching for the lad when he should have fucked off home!!

EDIT: It’s even worse reading some other articles about it.

      >Murphy was heard to say: “I’m going to smash your head in”

      >Judge Duffy said it was unfortunate that Murphy appeared to have got it into his head to try and find Mr Weir Gibbons, even though some of his friends seemed to try and calm him down.

      >It showed Murphy asking: “Do you know who I am?” and asking the deceased to say sorry.

      >Judge Duffy said it showed that Mr Weir Gibbons held up both his hands and said he was sorry.

Chap should have been banged up for a lot longer!!!!

It reads like the victim swung the first punch and Murphy then punched him once.

It’s an awful tragedy but this type of thing happens hundreds of times every weekend if not more and thankfully usually not with the same consequences.

Men need to stop drinking so much. Nearly all these incidents have alcohol as a contributing factor.

Heartbreaking. Sentence is a joke. Little prick will be out at 24!

I’m not joking, I hope that young lad never ever gets a moments peace. I wish all the bad luck on him. The cunt who filmed it has blood on his hands too.

I hope the sentence is appealed and he serves an actual appropriate sentence. When justice isn’t delivered it can make families never fully feel satisfied that their family members life meant anything.

5 years for taking a life after actively seeking out to fight someone who was alone with your little loser friends to back you up. All because he asked them not to be so obnoxiously loud.
My heart is broken for the victim’s family.
Far too lenient. Prison will be hard for that little shitebag, his privileged upbringing won’t help him and will actually place a target on his back with other likely assuming he will come from money.

That sentence is a joke and is frankly frightening. It might as well give people a free ticket to just go around killing people. Ireland has a very serious problem with extremely aggressive stuff like this and that kind of sentencing just underlines exactly why.

What does being a rugby player have to do with any of this?

A family friend died in a similar way a long time ago when I was younger than I am now. It just a terrible tragedy. Short moments that change the course of so many people’s lives on both sides. Heartbreaking.

strange how the xenophobes are quiet on this one. if this person was an immigrant this would be a whole different thread

Ryan Weir Gibbons was a distant relative of mine. Nobody in the family is happy with the sentence. It’s another case of a judge seeing a young lad and feels they shouldn’t punish them too harshly because they have their whole life ahead of them as if the victim didn’t either.

Ryan was 29 when it happened. He too had his whole life ahead of him, but apparently that life was only worth 5 years. The judge says the young lad who did this was “remorseful” yet any of my family that attended the court earlier today and the other week would tell you he was far from remourseful. His family has also been causing problems for Ryan’s family too, primarily on social media, as if it was them and Ryan who ruined their sons life, not his own actions.

Getting off a bus to go after someone who poses no danger while your friends try to stop you and… manslaughter. 🙄 Joke of a fuckin country and that animal will be out and about in a couple of years.

    12. CliffDagger on

5 years for manslaughter seems very soft. And let’s not forget with remission a prison year is ten months. So that’s 40 months he’ll serve max. Not to mention getting let out a bit early on temporary release near the end of his sentence because the prisons are over capacity. He’ll probably do about 3 actual calendar years.

    13. True_Paper_3343 on

Dude probably only got 5 years because he has the most average name in Ireland

    14. therealjimcreamer on

Yeah ok its a lenient sentance, drunk kid hits somebody and they hit their head and died ! 100% that should be punished harshly. But this was very unlucky for both involved . The amount of little and big scumbags with multiple convictions in this country that never see jail time, that have hit people and thank fuck those people are lucky enough to survive the encounter . The justice system here is absolutely no deterant to throwing punches. Im glad that this kids got time but until we start giving serious jail time to cunts that take this risk on the regular its just going to repeat itself !

    15. Quiet_Yellow2000 on

I hope the killer will never be employed or know a day of peac for the rest of their days. 5 years for killing someone is utter bullshit. The details of the case make this even worse. This wasn’t a punch thrown in a moment of anger. He went looking for the guy. Should have gotten maximum possible setence.

    16. kagetorad on

I assume that the deceased family will be waiting on the killer release to get him.

    17. TurkeyPigFace on

Judge Elma Murphy should be ashamed of that sentence. What a joke.

    18. IDKontent on

I’m going to be very careful with my words here, and condolences go out to the Ryan’s poor family. However, I see people talking about how lenient the sentence is and I’d just like to add another perspective, some people are confusing killing with murder. Yes Ryan killed that lad, but he’s not a murderer, how many people have punched someone in the face with equal force and they HAVEN’T fallen back and died and then as a result they face no legal repercussions? Then those same individuals are walking around society as free people in the dozens with none of you even realising. Punching someone doesn’t show intent to kill or cause any serious harm, again, please don’t misconstrue this as me defending the scumbag who punched him, I’m just trying to help yous understand how the Judge came to that sentence.

If I was the father of that young lad if probably get more than 5 years for what I would do upon his release
