There’s alot of people who can’t access passports and driver’s licenses for one reason or another
ID is mandatory for basically everything we do yet there’s no national ID program. It’s kinda silly. It’s left countless 1000s of people just sort of stuck.
Yeah. Just redress it and trot it out 12 months from now.

He might just win me over. This was nonsense. We’ve got passports and provisionals, leave the tech nanny state creep alone and let’s actually focus on the real problems this country is facing
But he’s going ahead with the OSA and therefore we kinda need digital ID. If you cancel the OSA, great. But if it goes ahead, digital ID means you only need to give your ID to the government and everything uses that. Without digi ID you have to individually send your ID to every website and it spreads the risk.
Will it actually stay off the table this time or will he slowly edge it back in through other policies like Starmer did?
Digital ID was a precursor to building up a one stop shop for access to state services.
The whole issue was hijacked by tin foil nuts who thought 15 min neighbourhoods were going to imprison them on their road.
I can’t stress enough how far the UK behind Asia, middle east and even countries like Brazil in terms of digital access to state services largely facilitated by a digital id.
Imagine being able to access and manage everything from DVLA services, HMRC, NHS, pension, or benefits etc.. all on one app or website.
People bemoan how slow, out dated and inefficienct the government and state is, this was a big step to fix that.
Labour wasted it’s goodwill on imposing the OSA, a massive data gathering and censorship exercise in the name of protecting the children.
Which left it with no political capital left to bring in the actual good idea that was digital ID. Or as it should have been actually marketed: a system to integrate government services and logins that already exist and currently involve a mish mash of scanning passports and driving licences, and posting things.
Digital ID involved no increase in surveillance, just making existing things work better for the state and public. It increased the power of the state by giving them better, more integrated data, but that is always a consequence of making things work better.
OSA increased the power and surveillance of the private sector.
Of all the powerful actors in the world, the state is the only one that is actually accountable to us. It’s power is our power, but we resist any increase in it’s power, while permitting the rise of unaccountable private power.
Didn’t we fight a world war so we would never have to “show your papers”
Lots of people here missing the point. Whether digital ID cards are sensible or not, they’re deeply, deeply unpopular. I really don’t think the positives outweigh the massive amount of political capital it would cost to force them through. There’s lots of popular, high impact stuff Labour needs to prioritise – nationalising utilities and improving the cost of living.

The whole digital ID debate is so silly; you would think the UK is the only country in the world trying to get digital IDs passed. Fun fact: there are 89 countries that have some sort of digital ID. People in this country think everything is a conspiracy.
Everyone saying we already have driving licences and passports is missing the point.
Driving licences were designed to serve as proof you were allowed drive a car. Passports were designed to identify you for the sake of international travel.
Neither were designed to allow quick and secure identity verification for accessing government or financial services, especially online. If, say, you’re an employer wanting to verify someone’s right to work, it takes week to get confirmation. Digital ID would make that instant.
Digital ID makes it easier to verify your identity when you need to, and is also much more secure and vastly harder to counterfeit, since it can be instantly checked against a central database. This makes identity theft and other fraud much harder to perpetrate.
If you already have a driving licence and passport this won’t require giving up any extra data – it will just make that data much easier to check and verify when needed.
If you have a smartphone, or if you use social media (like a Reddit account…) then you already surrender far more data about yourself to companies who will not only share it with the government, but who will also sell it to advertisers and anyone who’ll pay them enough.
It’s also worth pointing out that plenty of robustly democratic countries around the world already use Digital ID, like the Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium, Spain, France, Finland, Germany, Switzerland, and Sweden.
It’s vastly more secure and it saves considerable time and money (e.g. Estonia estimated their digital ID saved adults about 5 working days each year). I don’t know why people in the UK are so hysterical about it.

Starmer doing absolutely zero in his first 100 days to tackle the cost of living crisis is pretty much what I attribute to his complete failure in government, he did nothing with the low hanging fruit that were relatively easy to address and instead went after pensioners winter fuel allowance.
Burnham just needs to focus on cost of living, renationalising as much infrastructure as fast and as sensibly as possible, closing tax loopholes, putting together a proposal for a real wealth tax and removing our support for the genocide in Gaza and he will not be able to lose. The roadmap is that simple, so be interesting to see if he does a Starmer and go wildly off path into the weeds of stuff no one cared about like Starmer did with ID Cards and VPN Bans.
Absolute slam dunk and no brainer decision for him. He should start by getting rid of Kier’s dystopian anti-privacy and surveillance laws
i actually do think a free id card for everyone is a good idea. most european countries offer the same
I have nothing against digital ID on principle, but I do not remotely trust a government under the current iteration of Labour or Conservatives to implement it it well.
Also, the way people dismiss any criticism of digital IDs as being from conspiracy theorists on par with flat earthers rubs me the wrong way, so I feel compelled to disagree with those people out of spite.

Who on earth are all these people worried about constantly having ID on them? Don’t think my drivers licence has left the house in about 7 years.
