Galway dweller here. Still seems like there are plenty of tourists around. A few less is fine by me.
This is surely propaganda, who is going to Saudi Arabia
because hotel cost is so high compared to all the world.
I wouldn’t worry, once the rest of Europe realizes that the temperature here during the summer is very tolerable we will see a shift. I would like to see where the reduction is coming from, north America??

Okay, I read the source, and whoever made this chart doesn’t know how to do maths,
But Ireland went from 6.6 million foreigners tourist to 6.4 million foreigners tourists. (I’m excluding Domestic tourists because they increased by 15%)
So according to the source in the lower right corner, Ireland lost 2.8% of tourists, so I don’t know where they got the 32% from. Also the cause the of the reduction is because of Dublin Airport cap, not VAT
while it’s positive to see Israel lose tourists, it’s a pity Morocco is gaining them.
Morocco too is responsible for a brutal, oppressive illegal occupation. It too is buildings settlements to change the facts on the grounds. it too is commiting war crimes.
the same outrage Israel feels should be felt by Morocco too. they should not be a holiday destination.
I really think that eventually the word is going to get out about how expensive it is here. I’d be surprised if we get many repeat visitors, so the gains from price gauging now will just turn into losses even quicker.

I also have seen so many Arabs (myself included) who just want to visit Ireland for their support for Palestine 🇵🇸 ❤️ 🇮🇪 ❤️ 🇮🇶.
Last flight I was on out of Dublin I heard some tourists leaving talking with each other about how shocked they were by how outrageously expensive Ireland was, even when you leave Dublin it’s equally as bad.
If it wasn’t for the distance to Japan from either this part or the world or America, Japan would be on top. They’ve seen a ridiculous increase in tourism
This is what happens when hire cars are over a grand for a weekend and the hotels not so far off.
That’s funny-in the last 7 years I’ve lived in Galway city center, tourism has massively increased every single year (since Covid) and locals have lost housing every single year due to illegal Airbnb’s. There used to be actual locals who lived in town but over the last 7 years I never see anyone else living city center anymore.
We have an inexhaustible supply of yanks who think they’re Irish. Fossil fuels will run out long before that does.
On hols at the moment and by god it highlights that we are being absolutely raped and gouged at almost every turn.

The CSO changed their data collection methodology and suddenly our tourist numbers dropped massively. That’s the story. The collection methodology isn’t exactly the most robust anyways – just surveying a small amount of people at our ports snd airports asking them if they’re tourists.
Dublin Airport is booming, snd while that’s certainly not all inbound tourists. It really doesn’t support this drop-off. Same with visitor numbers at attractions.
A quick fact check on chat GPT shows that the OECD is using numbers collected by the CSO, but the CSO says that the methodology changed and that the numbers from 2019 should not be compared to the numbers in 2025.
Is less tourism a bad thing?
Not much to recommend Ireland really, Dublin is a kip that is best avoided and although the rest of the country isn’t as bad it’s overpriced and if you’re coming here for Irish friendliness and personality forget it lol.
I think for rich Americans staying in high end hotels (Ashford castle etc) who don’t really care about money and are here for the golf etc there is still a draw. But I could never recommend Ireland to an average European like the middle class Germans we used to get or a French family. It would be embarassing for them to arrive and see the state of the place.
The USA is also a mess so a lot less American tourists from this

A friend of mine who has three young kids was genuinely thinking of taking 5 days off to himself to rent an Air B n B when GTA6 comes out somehwere in Wicklow (with his wifes approval) – its literally cheaper to fly to Berlin and get one there(flights included) than to rent one here.

Not surprised, I went to Spain for a week and had to stay a night in Dublin as there was no train or bus services available.
The night in Dublin cost almost as much as a week in spain.
Denmark is priced quite similar to Ireland so there is more to it than cost. Tourism Board needs to get it’s act together.

I don’t mind less tourists. We’re too reliant on them and it’s hurting our communities and culture. A moderate reduction wouldn’t bother me at all. It would force us to develop more sustainable economic drivers.
We’ve doubled down on the lowest hanging fruit of American tourists with vaguely “Irish” identities for a long, long time now. That was a good idea. Then we took that influx of money and flittered it away with very little national investment in native industries.
We would be much safer, and so would our children and grandchildren, if we developed a sustainable national economy. Money wasn’t the barrier to that in the past (and isn’t now, we have a huge national surplus), the barrier was the notion that we could just suckle the American tit forever.
The fact ireland is only 2nd place because 1st is a warring terrorist state prone to murdering children should be a big wakeup call
The problem is tourism Ireland who are content with low volume one off visitors, who’s single most important policy is one of milking the diaspora and perpetually drives a faux luxury tourist economy. The problem is it’s luxury prices with a 3 star experience. There is no way of doing Ireland on a budget therefore it’s left off millions of tourists lists.
Maybe if the hotels weren’t full of free loaders, prices wouldn’t be so high
