Reading through the article, it mostly seems to be amplifying the loudest right wing and far-right wing voices we have, as one would expect.
For my money, the Greek government shouldn’t have given the subsidies. I don’t have a problem with the selection of Lupita Nyong’o, mind you, I just feel it’s a waste of government funds regardless of casting choice. Obviously my opinion isn’t a monolith representative of the country, I’m just a guy, I just think the whole casting thing is just stupid internet noise.
Personally, I will wait for the movie to come out in a lower pricetag for me to watch.

This happens every time a Hollywood blockbuster is set in Ancient Greece or Greek Mythology. It happened with Troy and 300. Those movies were not “woke” but we found other things to complain.
Both of those movies did insane ticket sales.

Obviously creative liberty exist but i don’t think it should be used this way… One example is the armor… The armor isn’t historically accurate but given how ugly accurate armor would be on screen, changing it seems logical and it doesn’t affect the story. Casting actors that would stick out like a sore thumb in the setting is just weird.
I bet none of these complainers are going to have a problem with a Finn playing Jesus in The Passion 2: Electric Bogaloo.

From what I’ve seen about the movie, it doesn’t deserve my time. It doesn’t look to represent the era and people it is supposedly trying to portray.

The theaters are packed. Me and all my friends watched the movie and mostly enjoyed it.
Could the casting be more accurate? Yes, but the Troy and 300 movies weren’t accurate either. It’s cinema.

It was a decent movie, but not overly profound or bewildering. I can’t relate to the critical reception.
As far as the casting, yeah, it’s obviously Americanized.
I am happy a movie about a classic story from antiquity got made with such a large budget in the first place. That’s my main take-away. The result is pretty good overall and visually spectacular. Definitely worth seeing in cinemas. Some scenes are super well done.
People were miffed by the casting and yet here I am questioning why the boats looked like Viking longships.
And before someone screams “its a fantasy”, you can still attempt to show the culture and technology of the area that the story is based off of.

The thing that really bothers me about the race swapping aspect is the asymetry of it.
Very few people who support it would also support that infamous 50s film where John Wayne played Genghis Khan.
Nor would they likely support casting European actors in traditionally non-European roles in films about the mythology of other non-European civilisations.
Indeed very few would be able to justify the race swapping without appeals to historical injustices particular to Hollywood and America.
None of this necessitates that this will be a bad film. Indeed in Lawrence of Arabia Prince Faisal was played exceptionally well by Alec Guinness. But I totally understand why it irks many Greeks specifically and film watchers in general.

I’m Greek and I haven’t seen anyone in social media complain about Greeks not being in the movie. I only saw them complain about the movie and the cast being garbage.
