Makes sense, all they seemed to sell was shitty funko pops and other random tat like that.
Damn, seeing one of my childhood shops be relegated to a section at the back of a sport direct, it’s depressing
“no major console launches since 2020” I guess they ignored that the Switch 2 launched last year with the fastest selling launch of any other tracked console…
The lack of a console launch really can’t be blamed for the demise of GAME. It wouldn’t have saved them, they just became a glorified plastic tat seller and lacked any reason to buy games from them compared to the alternatives. You can’t be the most expensive option with poor service and a vanishing physical presence and expect to recover!
Don’t understand how they owe so much money when they’re owned by Fraser corp, one of the richest companies in the UK?
Almost like selling a small selection of games at RRP, gutting their pre-owned market selection and selling damaged Funko pops and boardgames in a corner of a dingy Sports Direct wasn’t exactly a prosperous endevour.
CEX had them beat on most fronts. Sure there’s still a load of shit that gets through but the more vast options including retro were something GAME didn’t offer. I did like some of the tidbits GAME sold but when the store became a mainly tidbits store it did nothing that HMV didn’t do better. Shame but that’s how the world works, beaten on all fronts
So kind of them to buy up then shut down all the Gamestations just so they could sack off the video games leaving us with the shite that is CEX.
I used to work at a branch of game and honestly have been watching their downfall with a degree of schadenfreude. Shit job with shit managers and whenever we got anyone from head office coming in they were shit too. Shit pay. Shit hours. Shit responsibilities (basically turning us into mobile phone salesmen with no training or pay incentives.) Oh and lots of shit customers!
My colleagues were pretty cool. And some of the customers were nice.
I worked in a chain bookshop before that and it was SO much nicer.
Even if they’d survived that Sony have just signed their death warrant anyway. Rose tinted glasses perhaps but it is a shame that kids today can never experience the excitement of getting to visit a physical game store.
So I can probably throw away that gift card with indeterminate value now.

And nothing of value was lost. Fuck em. They never got my business after I bought a used game. Got it home, didn’t work at all and then refused to refund me because I had broken their stupid, unenforceable sticker saying that they wouldn’t give a refund if the sticker was broken. For a used game where, might I add you are unable to check the disc before purchase. Ridiculous. I stood in the store demanding my money back and anybody who came to purchase something I interrupted the cashier and told the potential customer that they should think twice because if it’s broken they will just steal your money. That got a manager involved pretty quickly but it should not have even got that far.
Tragic, GAME was a big part of my childhood, good memories of spending my weeks paper round monet on a new trade in game, buying halo action figures ect
Think the last thing I ever bought from them was a fallout 4 Xmas jumper in like 2015 or something
That being said, their whole business kinda got made totally redundant over the last decade so doubt anything could have saved them
I used to buy all my games at game back in the 2000s. They reliably came a day before release, I got decent points. What was not to like? Then I remember the points were devalued, games started coming days after release and then Amazon became cheaper. GameStation and CEX were better for used. There was no reason to get new games there. They became pointless.
Bought my 360 Elite from GAME in 2009 with Limited Edition Gears Of War 2 and an extra official controller.
Used to work there as a teenager. Bosses were constantly on us to upsell additional shite to customers whenever they bought something. Never felt right trying to sell accessories (gun or guitar shaped controllers) to people who just wanted to buy the latest copy of FIFA.
We got no high street presence for gaming before GTA6.
Honestly the last physical release I preordered and queued for was GTA5
Always thought GAME was shite. Even when they had competitors in the retail sector they never really offered much value. They charged the most, offered you the least on trade-ins and most of the staff had no clue.

It’s getting harder and harder for physical shops to justify their existence with internet shopping. Why do you go to a physical shop?
Maybe you want to try on clothes then and there, or you want to smell some nice soaps in person before buying, maybe you want to control the quality of the veggies you want to buy, or maybe like for tabletop shops there are play spaces and refreshments sold.
As far as I can tell Game had no such reason to exist. The only people they were catering towards were people who were uncomfortable searching for this sort of stuff online or people who were in the area to being with. That’s not a great business strategy anymore for a product area which is really easily served online and worse is now incredibly digital. This isn’t even like newspapers where there is at least a difference in product value between a physical paper or a digital article. You can’t flick through a game any better in person than online, unlike a book, if not it’s worse!
Game, to survive, really needed to find a reason for people to use them over Amazon, digital store fronts, heck even over places like Argos! They chose to sell tat which isn’t a draw it’s a way to try and maximise profits from those they are retaining.
If I’m honest, I’m surprised they lasted as long as they did. I wouldn’t have been surprised if they’d disappeared in the late 2010s but clearly the digital sales have become too high even in the playstation and Nintendo spaces.

I did go into a Game for the first time in years (inside a Sports Direct) recently as I was in the mood to browse and pick up a random game like I used to when I was younger but the experience was dire.
Cheap plastic toys and their game prices were insane, even pre-owned.
Game became utter trash in its later years, but I have so many fond childhood memories of travelling from the tiny village I lived in to the nearest Game, which was in Plymouth. Shelves and shelves of big boxed Amiga games (which is what I had growing up) PC, and of course the consoles. Like most we were not a well off family so couldn’t afford much, but I was always just happy to look.
Watching a shop i worked in for years, and loved every minute of, be reduced to selling random shite and three games; only to disappear overnight just breaks my heart.
