I’m rather Russian, but my mother is Wolgadeutsche. So, technically I was eligible to move to Germany and get the passport as Spätaussiedler. But I didn’t. I did it through Blaue Karte.
I would say people know they exist and that’s about it for most.
I mean there are barely any left. I guess people generaly know that there were german communitys and settlers outside modern germany and thats about it. Since most of them assimilated, came back to germany or were “deported”, its not of much interest for most people. Even though the Wolga Deutsche had a very interesting story.
American here. From Volga German immigrants to the central valley in California. Many families in central California trace their lineage to the Volga Germans. My grandparents spoke German (although, I could barely understand them, even after studying in Germany). Definitely grew up eating a ton of Bierock!
