While I will take what I can get… The problem with social media is not mainly that kids have access. It’s the algorithms that push disinformation and radicalization. It’s the non moderation. It’s that open fascists can buy single companies and have never before seen political influence.

Damn this is horrifying, abusing subject of children safety to push for total control.
At some point there will be compulsory realtime GPS tracking dildos for every citizen

This legislation is just not a solution. If you don’t want kids on social medias it’s the parents responsibility to make sure their child can’t use it.

    4. God forbid we hold the companies accountable that provide the exploitative algorithms.

Or we could just hold social media companies accountable for their predatory practices. It’s not like children are the only demographic being manipulated.

The new generation is much more anti Israel than the previous ones, so macrons bosses needed him to take action

I mean it’s the new alcohol or cigarettes of our time. It’s obviously damaging to kids growing up and parents are not doing anything themselves and now the state has to be the bad guy and tell kids you can’t have your drugs until you can make decisions on your own. 15 years old is not that old, so it’s not even a big deal, it’s only for kids before high school basically.

So now they are requiring people ID themselves before using social media?

Seems like that was the point.

How soon will France raise the age of childhood to 22? /s

    10. KomisktEfterbliven on

This is just an excuse to require ID from everyone.

The first EU country to violate the fundamental rights for adults.

    12. UncleObli on

Yeah it sounds better than “France becomes the first EU country to require ID verification for social media for all citizens”.

Issue is the enforcement. If it requires ID verification, I’m completely against that, as it puts the privacy violation burden on the entire population. These companies should not have access to our ID’s. If enforcement is just trust the user birthdate input, kids are just going to lie about their birthday.

    14. This is likely not legal and hopefully it’s taken down in court fast. There also going to be a review to determine whether the bill complies with the French Constitution.

What qualifies as social media? YouTube? Amazon? IRC? Discord? Minecraft? MS Teams? The school intranet?

To all the Karens and Terrys complaining that they have a better idea: it may not be perfect but it’s a step in the right direction. Most often that’s all you can hope for each step of the way.

    17. People find out Macron is the friend of fascism and the end of liberty

they should ban the social media sites if they dont change the fucking algorithms.

    19. Facebook was already not allowed for kids under 13 before a law passed but was easy to lie about your age when creating an account.

    20. Cpt_Riker on

      Well done.

The only people opposing these bans believe billionaires should be able to exploit children for profit.
