“Franco-German cooperation on nuclear deterrence is becoming an election campaign issue in France. Following announcements made at the 26th Council of Ministers meeting in Brühl (near Cologne), left-wing presidential candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon declared that, should he win the election, he would terminate nuclear cooperation with Germany. “Macron’s commitments bind only him,” the founder of the LFI party wrote on the platform X. “If we win in 2027, everything will be reviewed from A to Z.”

He argued that Germany’s aim to build Europe’s largest conventional army posed a problem for neighborly relations. “Nuclear sharing is absolutely unacceptable,” Mélenchon emphasized, implying that Berlin could be integrated into the chain of command. The left-wing populist also criticized the fact that parliament had neither been informed nor consulted.”

The far left and far right in French politics united in their anti-German hatred. What else is new?

If these chancers (from both ends of the political spectrum) ever gain real power in France, they will wreck the EU for good.

Abysmal international measures coming from the far left and abysmal international measures coming from the far right.

*Can’t wait to have to choose.*

ah, that’s how you build trust in military cooperation

Everything he can to weaken Europe and favour Russia.

    6. The French thinking that they should fight the Germans in this political climate is the most worrying thing I’ve ever heard of. If the EU isn’t united we might as well pick a global power and willingly b come vassals. Idiots

How many more ridiculous statements will it take for the French left to see that Jean-Luc Mélenchon is a moron?

PS: I look forward to seeing Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s defenders claim it’s all a Russian bot campaign trying to smear him. Delusional.

If Melenchon is againts you, you are doing the right thing.

Absolutely everything this old fool wants would end up weakening Europe and strengthening Russia and China. The guy has a dictatorship fetish.

and this is why this nuclear sharing is dead at arrival. it only ever lasts until the next election.

if the world further develops as it does, eventually germany needs it’s own nuke out of sheer necessity

    11. RandomGuyWithSixEyes on

He doesnt want France to give security guarantees to Germany but he doesnt want Germany to improve its own army either 🤷

I’ve read a lot of stupid things this week, but this one takes the cake.

    13. Refuge-Room on

Well, I don’t like the Macronist center, but then again, the other two options really aren’t any better—what with the RN and LFI seemingly competing to sabotage France and Europe… it’s the least-bad choice, I guess 🫩

    14. DubiousBusinessp on

Why is no one allowed to have a sane left wing party?

    15. Such a weird thing to emphasize.

Did Macron say that Germany was gonna be included in the chain of command ?

If he did then that’s perfectly reasonnable on Melanchon’s part to say that.

If he didn’t then that’s just weird to say that.

French nukes will stay French. The proposal is to extend the nuclear umbrella to European countries, and strategic cooperation with Germany.

France will never give their nukes to EU. Even less, giving Germany any kind of decision power over our nukes.

    16. So France will have to pick a candidate in the upcoming elections between a euroskeptic right winger and a euroskeptic left winger? Amazing.

    17. People act like he is just a leftist candidate, but he’s basically a Kremlin mouthpiece just like Le Pen.

    18. castorkrieg on

Ah yes, the permanently angry semi senile guy that is losing in polls to Le Pen in the second round, truly a shinning star of the French left.

I will write it again – people thing far right is less evil than this guy.

    19. This dude just gets worse and worse every time I hear about him

    20. Tankie gonna tankie. He said that France should co operate with Russia in Syria.

    21. lastplatypus1747 on

Il prefererait un accord de cooperation nucléaire avec l’iran, le hezbollah, le hamas, Xi et Nicolas Maduro, hein ah non dommage pas Nicolas.

    22. TheTurkishPatriot12 on

If I’m wrong please correct me but Isint Melechon basically a left wing tankie?

    23. Free_Poem1617 on

He hates Germans, in a very racist way, he even wrote a book on how Germany rules EU with so many anti nazi German tropes it was ridiculous. My guess, it’s when he started being sweet eyed by Russia.

    24. Melxgibsonx616 on

      France is really fucked.

One one side, you have Le Pen, who gets money from the Kremlin. And on the other side, you have Melenchon, who is a vatnik.

En tant qu’alsacien, les allemands avec une armée forte c’est « merci mais non merci »

    26. This doesn’t help anyone just divide europe. It just another prove that if you go too much to left or to the right you come to the same place morons loving russia, hating immigrants.

    27. iTzzSunara on

Alrighty Monsieur Baguette. Guess we’ll build our own nuclear weapons then… 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

    28. Megafritz on

We (Germany) need our own nuclear arsenal. It does not need to be large….but we have all learned recently: If you have nukes (North Korea, Israel, Russia) no one dares to attack. If you do not have nukes (Ukraine, Cuba, Venezuela, Iran), you are a potential victim.

    29. Longjumping-Fox7755 on

If the French don’t protect us from the Russians we will get our own bomb but there is no scenario in which we will just expose ourself to nuclear blackmail from Russia without a nuclear security guarantee, be it from our allies or if necessary our own bomb. We could build one quite quickly and easily and if he wins, I hope Merz has the guts to pursue it, non-proliferation be damned.

Excuse me… we have a nuclear agreement with Germany 🤔 ?
