I’m feeling very mixed about this, I don’t understand Russian but reading the article, I assume the woman’s “rat-like” remark was referring to people coming up out of nowhere and rushing against you to splash, as in the experience, rather than calling the Armenian people rats -maybe. As for her anger burst, well, her fault for not paying attention to the holiday, but in the end if she had an outburst, she had an outburst. I’ve had outbursts a couple of times where I haven’t weighted what I said in the heat of the moment, and regretted them later.

I am not excusing the behavior, she took the backlash for it, but getting charged by Armenia for it, with the potential of getting convicted up to 1-4 years of jail time, is a bit extreme for in my opinion a mistake, is it not? She had made an apology post later, not sure how genuine.

leaving everything aside, how much of this should be regarded as freedom of speech? it opens a can of worms. Her remarks were offensive, insults the country and people, and there are more “famous” people who do similar remarks against us so I can’t be selective here, at the same time, potential years of prison for an outburst is a bit extreme.

As an Armenian, while she can go to hell, I don’t think we should be imprisoning people for speech. Just deport her and don’t let her come back.

I don’t think this should be punishable. And it shouldn’t be even under current law, she’s being investigated for “Public speech aimed at inciting or promoting hatred, discrimination, intolerance or hostility, as well as distributing materials or objects for that purpose” (criminal code 329-2-3), I saw the original video and I don’t see her inciting hatred, rather only expressing a hateful opinion. In Armenia there’s basically no free speech, article 42 of the constitution which is about “freedom of expressing opinions” says that it can be restricted for bs like defending public morals.

Even as an armenian i get mad at dumbass armenians who can’t respect a simple request like, “Please don’t throw water on me.” Mostly just perverts who want to see my big tits.

Then comes the classic, “You know it’s Vardavar, so why are you going outside?” Like, what exactly am I supposed to do, stay home all day? Tradition is not a free pass to do whatever you want.

I don’t support prosecuting her, but I do support revoking her residency permit (or whatever status she has) and deporting her. We’re not Russia, but see what happens if an Armenian citizen makes even a mildly critical statements towards Russians in their country.

Also, looked at her Instagram page, and that Vartavar post was not the only problematic comment she made towards Armenians, even after mentioning how Armenians were generous and helpful towards her when she first moved to the country and had no job and place to stay

And she does seem a little mentally unstable and obsessed with social media.

One of the unfortunate aspects in which Armenia is backwards.

Also for the people in here with “mixed” feelings. Your feelings shouldn’t be mixed. Speech censorship unless it’s about immediate violence is disgusting. It’s a very simple concept.

Wow how can these people be both so sensitive to get offended AND so disrespectful towards people who happen to be outside and not want to be included in your “celebration”. I had the misfortune to be visiting Armenia during Vardavar and I ended up regreting my whole trip, a trip that initially impressed me, as I have visited your mountains and small villages. I even loved Yerevan in all it’s randomness. But to have my last day there on Vardavar was hell. In the morning I went out expecting to be splashed – i wore shorts and light shoes. Even not having a bucket or water gun, okay, let’s say it was fun, and also i could see it coming because i was visiting some parks.

But in the afternoon i had to travel back, so, with my big backpack, it was impossible for me to be on any street without being absolutely drenched with about 25 buckets, and at least 10 water hoses (water guns i couldn’t even count). That happened in 2 hours. And for each of them I TOLD and SIGNALED them not not splash me, that I am not participating, i tried avoiding – they (mostly men) ran after me, it was so bad, they ran and pushed me into the traffic.

So, why are armenians getting offended after disrespecting every boundary someone is trying to set and not being even familiar with the idea of consent?
You have a nice country and so rich history, why waste it on savage-like behaviours?
