    2. They identify the pigeon.

      This isn’t a German thing: rings on birds’ legs are really common all over the world. Sometimes they might be put there by ornithologists studying, for example, the migratory patterns of birds or keeping track of endangered species. In the case of pigeons, though, it’s possible that these are homing or racing pigeons, and the rings identify who they belong to: they might be taking a break on their journey home, or they’ve got lost, or they’ve just decided to stay right where they are.
