Not surprised. Germany’s relationship with Russia’s energy sector has been complicated and dirty for decades.

When Ronald Reagan was first elected, but before he was sworn in, he angered the then West German government by urging the U.S. State Department to interfere with the FRG’s plans to buy oil and gas from the USSR.
His reasoning was that, in the event of a conflict, the Soviets could use a potential gas-dependency to extort or cripple Western Europe. He also did it because he was kind of a nutjob. But mostly it was for the first reason.
Reagan was one of least best things to happen to modern America, but he wasn’t wrong about this, and we should have listened.
How the heck is it a secret that in the event of a war or politics or a hangover that russia would use threats to the the oil market to get a country, or do random power moves or even a good scotch egg.
