So I’m sat reading this right now with my cousin who was in low altitude air defense (LAAD) for awhile and those kind of concrete hangars and underground hangars were a big favorite of Saddam – they were called Yugo Shelters which might be why this was translated as shelter but they mean a kind of hangar.

Those “hardened” hangars won’t actually help in the long run without proper LAAD that’s worth a damn. Which was exactly the problem that Saddam had – no LAAD.

We’ll be interested to see if the Russians do next what Saddam did back then, which is to place their valuable airframes beside the nearest schoolyard, or to force civilians to camp by the flightline – human shields were a bigger deterrent than hangars in the end.
