It’s a normal thing to ask for those really, so first point of contact should always be the former employer. Formal only, if they refuse to send it.
Can you reach out to your former manager?
It might be a bit old fashioned but it could be better to call or contact people through their company communication channels instead of their own channels in these kind of matters. You’re contacting them on something related to their work, not related to them personally.
