    1. Were you expecting them to leave your package right next to the border and call you to pick it up?

DHL Is bad, you can try to open a legal proceeding but I don’t know if it’s worth it..

I freaking hate DHL too, for this exact reason, and that’s why I will never use their service again…

Sadly, I can’t help you with if you can or canno’t go against them. But if you do, I would be very interested to know what the results were.

    4. Are you sure you didn’t agree to this service?

I would bet that in their terms of service there’s a clause that agrees to it when you’re receiving a package from out of the country. Check that before you make a complaint.

    5. I don’t see any issue here. You imported an item worth CHF 682.10 (excl. VAT).

ah the weekly “I imported an item and oh no I have to pay import fees, how dare they” thread

It is perfectly legal, and it’s exactly the same with any carrier, may it be the Post, FedEx or whatever.

By whatever way you contracted DHL to carry your parcel, may it be by ordering online or however, you have contractually accepted their customs process by paying for the original service.
There’s nothing you can do about it as you authorized the charges, but you’ll know for next time. But let’s be frank here, there’s no getting around paying those custom clearance fee as long as you need to get parcels through the border.

If you want to handle the customs process yourself, you’re free to drive or take the plane to wherever you buy stuff and bring it back to Switzerland yourself. But if you’re using mail carriers, all of them will charge you for that, as long as your parcel is subject to VAT.

Send to friends house near border, cross border in the middle of the night, by bike!

Or just pay the damn fee

      > I never requested DHL to handle the customs clearance of my package, nor did I sign any agreement authorizing such a service.

Come on what did you think would happen if you gave an address in Switzerland ?

      > It is extremely troubling and frustrating to find that I have been billed for a service I neither solicited nor consented to.

You did by accepting the sales conditions.

      > I would appreciate any guidance on the steps to take to dispute this invoice effectively and to report this issue to the relevant regulatory bodies.

Just pay up and next time don’t make the same mistake.

Is this scummy and overpriced ? Yes absolutely !

Is this illegal ? No and that’s totally on you !

Next time I’d advise you to send your parcel to a point close to the border and then collect it yourself. Personally, I use the “poste restante” from the nearest post office (in France) and I only have to pay a few euros each time.

    11. Normally (every time I ordered abroad), the seller’s page states that the recipient must pay taxes and import duty.

      It’s always a bit of a gamble.

    12. I guess you’ve never imported anything before. As others mentioned the Swiss Post does the same and in your case would’ve charged you even more. It’s one of the benefits of not being part of any free trade zone.

    13. That’s the consequence of privatizing the postal customs services, another one of these “genius” ideas politicians had.

For quite a few years they actually charged more, even 50+ in fees not VAT were quite common.
