From all I had previously seen, the HIMARS M270 already had the capability to launch ATACMS missiles. I was unaware they would require additional modifications to serve as firing vehicles for ATACMS.
However, I would be very interested to know if Ukraine could modify these long range missiles by swapping out the warheads, replacing the anti-personnel (shrapnel or cluster munitions) with “unitary” high explosive charges, capable of blowing up hardened concrete and steel structures … like the Kerch Bridge. 😉
ATACMS was developed for the m270, they first fired them in 1991. This is just an updated ATACMS that needed a software update on the m270.
