Are they legitimate and the reply address isn’t like realdentist@freemail.ru? Because if it’s in junk mails, maybe the email provider knows something more than you.
If yes, email them and ask for a PDF copy of the detailed bill? Maybe you’ll get one and then remember what it was? And even if not, you can talk to the staff at the clinic and figure out together whether maybe they got scammed by someone with a false identity.
You usually want to avoid debt collection because whether it’s true or not, it’s always a pain to deal with. If you can clear this up now, it’ll be easier. But on the other hand, it’s already 3 months since the deadline and if you haven’t heard from the debt collection office yet, maybe it’s just an online scam.
Just call them. If it’s a scam then they would tell you and you would know it immediately.
If it’s not a scam and you owe them money for real, then you could explain your situation (that it got in your spam folder) and that you would pay it immediately. This way you could maybe prevent the debt collector.
How can you be unsure if you’ve ever had treatment there?
Do you have like seriously strong memory loss?
Request an itemized bill for the services rendered. If it‘s legit it‘s time to pay up. If it‘s not, don‘t pay. Simple.
Give them a call. Why ask Reddit? Most likely if the debt collection started, you might have to contact the debt collector.
1. Call the clinic and explain ithonestly
2. If you can’t pay the bill there, get the contact information of the debt collector
3. pay it
Edit: Grammaridiot
Did you look at the sender email? Does it look legit? Are they being specific anywhere or is it just “the treatment”? Would you imagine a Swiss clinic sending out a payment reminder as well as threatening debt collection in English?
Is there any sort of attachment? If yes be careful about malware.
Did you undergo any sort of treatment anywhere in the summer of 2023? Sometimes bills for lab tests etc may be sent to the patient directly (although usually this goes to the insurance)
In this threatening email, did they refer to any sort of bill reference number or anything? No serious payment reminder goes out without any reference to the original bill.
You are unsure if you underwent treatment there? Did you get ANY sort of medical treatment around the timeframe they mention? If you did NOT undergo any sort of medical treatment then this is likely a scam sent out in the hopes of a few intimidated people just paying because the amount wouldn’t be worth the hassle of dealing with a Betreibung or similar.
Before you pay ANYTHING find out what clinic this is, find their website, get in touch with them directly and ask. You will most likely be met with confusion as this message sure as hell has more red flags than the USSR.
edit: If they send Intrum or similar and you are sure you don’t owe, don’t pay and do a Rechtsvorschlag in case they initiate a Betreibung.
edit2: I’m getting slavic/russian vibes from them writing “the treatment” instead of “your treatment”.
Well it depends on what they mean by debt collection. It could either refer to an Inkassobüro or to actual debt collection (Betreibungsamt). As others have said, call the hospital (google their number) and ask them to confirm that there is outstanding payment.
