Nearly a dozen designer prosthetics have been made, with veterans requesting designs like boats or Transformers. One such prosthesis was made for Ihor Protopopov from Kharkiv region. As he was defending Bakhmut, a missile struck his position, and he lost a leg.
“I didn’t feel pain, just a heavy pressure on my leg. I looked over and saw my leg lying to the side. Soldier Poltava applied a tourniquet and saved my life. I was lying under a tree, not afraid to die, but wanting to live. At one point, I thought of my son. In that moment, I knew I wouldn’t die,” Ihor recounts.
Ihor says he didn’t worry about losing his leg, understanding that he would need to adapt. The hardest part was waiting to start using a prosthesis.
“I want it to be stylish, cool, and youthful. At first, I asked for a black prosthesis, like an Audi 7. I spent a long time choosing a design because my child is young and was very afraid of the prosthesis at first. I wanted it to be more positive for him and to reflect my country. I wasn’t just sitting out the war; ” Ihor explains.
In the end, Ihor chose a design featuring the postage stamp “Russian warship, go…!”. Prosthetist Ivan Vynnychenko created the prosthesis for him. Ivan recently started making such prostheses to support soldiers, having made nearly ten so far. Soldiers can choose colors, patterns, or stickers.
Ivan says many soldiers are hesitant at first, but when they see others with them, they also want their own. Typically, prosthetics are plain, but soldiers often want something more cheerful. Some have requested designs with boats or Transformers, which their children love.
“My work isn’t as hard as what these guys do. What’s an extra 15 minutes for me? The guys love it, and I love seeing them happy. There are different styles of shoes, so why not have different styles of prosthetics? Besides, the guys aren’t shy about wearing prosthetics anymore; it’s mostly the older ones who worry about what people will think,” Ivan adds.

Sort of OT, but:
I saw a document recently. It was about a gifted climber dude who lost his leg because he got lost in a snow storm while searching for the cliff.
He has set up a company that creates modern prosthetics, and that in his prosthetics it’s very important to leave the nerves/muscles, those things that make the leg move, open. As the popular way is to put them to sort of a closed ball, because there’s no use for them. And they can’t be easily be recovered from that procedure anymore.
He has then been a successful prosthetic-climber, almost like a bionic man.
I wish that those new kinds of prosthetics that use all muscles and nerves could be used and tested in UA, because there’s a lot of need and a lot of willing patients to develop the products.
