Ho cercato di farmi un’idea della portata dell’operazione Kursk. È difficile visualizzare 1.000 km², soprattutto se vivi in un paese grande come il Canada o se lo paragoni alle vaste distese dell’Ucraina o della Russia (che cazzo!). Questi paesi sono così giganteschi che è facile perdere di vista cosa significhi davvero quel tipo di superficie terrestre.
Ma ecco qualcosa per mettere le cose in prospettiva: l’Ucraina avrebbe liberato oltre 1.000 km² nell’operazione Kursk dalla morsa di Putin, ovvero oltre 70 insediamenti. Per darvi un’idea della portata, l’Ucraina ha reclamato un’area più grande dei seguenti paesi:

[The Telegraph](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/08/13/ukraine-seizes-more-land-in-week-than-russia-eight-months/) reports that Ukraine’s gained more land in a week than Russia has in 8 months. Keep in mind Russia is also supposedly conducting an offensive.

And then compare that to the size russia has occupied –
– Before 2022, Russia occupied 42,000 km2 (16,000 sq mi) of Ukrainian territory (Crimea, and parts of Donetsk and Luhansk)
– an additional 119,000 km2 (46,000 sq mi) after its full-scale invasion by March 2022, a total of 161,000 km2

It’s not hard to understand 1000 km2. It’s a piece of land about 10 km on one side and 100 km on the other, or 20 km on the short side and 50 km on the long side, or a square approx 32 km on each side.

It’s funny you should write this. My local council area is 8500km2 and has a population of 6000 people and 6 towns. It’s a few farms in my head even though I know it’s not like that in kursk.
It’s not that hard to visualize!
1000 km^2 is a blob approximately 32km by 32km.
Or 20mi by 20mi.
You can visualize 20 miles right? Or 32 kilometers? At least one of those?
So just find a squarish area near you that is that far on a side.
It roughly corresponds to a major metropolitan area..

What Ukraine did was driving around small pockets of resistance / Groups of Orc for which they had no time/resources to transport to prison camps.
Since they don’t have much supplies, they are not really a threat. And thus the Ukrainian fast incursion succeeded.
Most experts says they are not fully in control, but they have made enough of a difference that Putler supposedly has mobilized the defensive ring around Moscow.
Putler’s cook once showed him that Russia has no defense in depth, only a thin layer in front.
They almost captured the size of Faroe Islands which is 1,393 km2
