>Enshrined in the German constitution since 1949, Article 116 (2) of the Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany grants former German citizens who were persecuted and their descendants **restored** German citizenship.
So, their ancestors were german citizens, but fled during the nazi regime, so their descendants regain it. The sentence “.. options their ancestors never had .” is not really true, but I get the point. Also this is nothing new, this law is in effect since 1949 and the creation of the federal german republic after the war.
