      Background; The increasingly authoritarian, conservative and anti-progressive party led by Erdoğan has waged a ruthless war against secularism and Ataturk’s legacy for the last 20 years, hoping to radically change the fabric of society by removing Ataturk from schools and education and the mention of evolution.

      So the fact that a whole new generation of youths that were born into and raised under AKP regime still turned out to be staunch believers of Ataturk, secularism and democratic republic has created shockwaves in conservative political circles who are yet to recover from latest crushing defeat of local elections.

      Translation of the oath;

      Repeating Chorus: We are the soldiers of Mustafa Kemal! (Ataturk)

      “We swear that any hand that reaches out for the secular and democratic republic’s independence, the indivisible integrity of the country, the honor and dignity of the great Turkish nation, and a single inch of soil of our beloved homeland, will find us standing before them. And our swords will always be sharp and ready. We are the children of the Turkish future. We were born with our honor, we will live with our honor and we will die with our honor. How happy is the one who says I am a Turk.”

      The lady speaking first was the number 1 graduate, now her stern face when she got the award from the dictator makes perfect sense. It was disgust with him. My respect for her grew 100%!

      In Turkey many people just exchange belief in God for belief in Turkey, making Turkish nationalism their new baseless relgion.

      Turkey definitely has the advantage of having a very impressive tradition to look at with Ataturk, who basically dragged Turkey kicking and screaming into the 20th century from being a totally lost and fucked up country. With really good results back then, so something to lean on. Many countries lack even this (like Russia).
