Post industrial revolution 2.0. I love my German neighbors but it’s about software now. Vorsprung durch Technik is not about hardware anymore.

The cars are just too darn expensive to buy and expensive to maintain. This is the problem.

They could try to make a car people can afford. Maybe some kind of “peoples car” or ” Peoples wagon”?
I don’t know now just throwing out ideas here!

So is it time to stop talking about tariffs on the Chinese market… or do these guys want to close factories in Germany/Europe, while manufacturing in South Africa, Peru, India or Malaysia and keep the tariffs?
Don’t get me wrong, I think putting a cap on the chinese market is a necessity, but if European corporations even think for a second about using tactics like the one described above, they should be warned.

In june they gave 4.5bln to the shareholders. Luckily they only knew about their problems the day after …

Understandable. You do not produce cars this generation wants or can afford and therefore your sales plunge. And you also do not want to produce cars that are smaller and cheap because no money for the privateers and investors if not every second sale is a 60k SUV. Kindly: go fuck yourselves.

I actually remember the the time when Volkswagen used to make reliable YET affordable cars. I’m really not sure who their target audience is nowadays.

I feel sorry for the people losing the jobs, but they should move on, Volkswagen is another dinosaur whose era has passed, I am sure they can find some other well paid jobs. It is time that German companies invest more in automation and cut unnecessary positions. The unions should spend more time in asking for raises and better working conditions rather than protect even the lazy workers.

So many car makers seem to circling the drain. Ford, Stelantis, Volvo. Numerous other brands are zombies like Chrysler and Buick that the parent companies seem to limp along. Tesla has plummeting sales. I guess the others are doing fine.

VAG have a global capacity of about 14million cars annually but made 9 million. A factory running at less than 80% capacity isn’t making any meaningful profit.
European market is down 2 million units since COVID and VAG is down about 500k units in that time which is about two factories.
They aren’t the only manufacturer who needs to get rid of excess capacity.
They are as big as you get sales wise along with Toyota. You might not like the product but they know their job.
Europe is a mature economy so they can’t grow to profit and need to shrink but they have a big battle ahead of them with the Betriebsrat and the local Federal Government who are a major shareholder.

I’m guessing a lot of sales have gone to Hyundai and Kia? I see a lot more of those on the road now a days. Healthy capitalism at work, vw have gotten too expensive and other companies have taken their place

It’s called late stage capitalism. The consumer isn’t rich enough to consume.

Plunging sales and record profits, interesting stuff.

“Volkswagen last year made roughly 9 million vehicles” similar to Toyota’s production capacity, while having the capacity to make 14 million. this is a bubble thats been growing since 1994 where a job guarantee was introduced. This also means that the entire company is bloated. while having a similar vehicle output as Toyota, Volkswagen has nearly twice as many employees. They’ve had these overproduction capacities for years, but you can only keep those, if you constantly increase margin.
