I find it both funny and annoying that people seem to think there is one “East German” accent.
As I have only hear Hoch Deutsch all my life in school and at home, I can say that Swabish is way out there for me to understand. My late uncle spoke Swabish and I had no idea what he was saying. My aunt had to be an intermediatary so I could understand him.
