The cemetery of the statues is a special deposit of the “Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo”, the institution that was founded in the 1300s for the construction of the Cathedral of Milan and is still active for its maintenance.

This is a “special depository” where all those sculptural works, statues, spires, decorative or architectural elements, which have now reached the final stage of their life and which, for reasons of integrity and safety, can no longer remain on the walls of the Cathedral, are housed.

In the event that the state of deterioration of the marble prevents its partial or total restoration, these works are stored in the so-called “Cemetery of Statues” at the Marble Yard on Brunetti Street.

But they are not destroyed. Instead, they are, in fact, guarded with great dedication and care by the master stone masons, as an everlasting reminder of their inestimable preciousness and Gothic beauty.

The lady with the cross at her chest is absolutely creepy, gives off a skin-melted kind of look for sure.
