At an animal shelter in the Dnipropetrovsk region, there lives a rescued baby [Marten](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marten) named Grizzly. The animal was abandoned by its mother when it was just a week old, left alone in a trench in Donetsk region. Exhausted, the baby marten was found by soldiers who later handed it over to the shelter.

The day they found her, the soldiers gave the marten to volunteers, who then brought her to the shelter in Dnipropetrovsk. The shelter’s manager, Savelii, said it was a miracle that Grizzly survived.

“She was lying abandoned in the trench, without even any fur at the time. Like all wild animals, they don’t easily adapt to human care and feeding, so it’s rare for them to survive. Out of three, maybe one would survive,” Savelii explained.

Upon arrival, Grizzly was in a very poor state and hadn’t eaten for several days. Savelii had to nurse her back to health, caring for her constantly like a small child, feeding her every hour or two.

“She even slept next to me. For about a month, I was focused entirely on her care,” he said.

Since martens are not social animals, Savelii couldn’t house Grizzly with other mammals. Instead, he brought her home and named her Grizzly. Savelii remembers that when she was still tiny, Grizzly refused to drink milk and would bite the bottle’s teat because her teeth had already started coming in at birth. Now, she recognizes her name and comes when called.

Grizzly was later provided with her own enclosure. Though she shows interest in other animals at the shelter, she doesn’t attack them. Her diet is designed to mimic her natural environment, consisting of chicks, fish, and berries. To keep her instincts sharp, food is often hung or hidden so that she has to hunt for it.

Now fully healthy, Grizzly is regularly treated for pests and vaccinated. Savelii hopes to release her back into the wild next spring.
