      That dude is filthy rich, has been an investment banker and knows *exactly* how to manipulate the public opinion. Maybe the only silver lining is that he could keep the right-wing at bay, but only by occupying their topics.

      Which means there might blow a stiff wind out of Germany when it comes to EU-wide solutions to things like asylum seekers, strengthening the EU or working with France on initiating some deep reforms. Expect more “Germany goes it alone and the rest can follow if they want”. I guess Ukraine doesn’t need to worry about him more than Scholz, but if Trump comes in and pulls help, Merz will not rally European NATO members to try and make up for the missing money and weapons, but throw his hands up and be like “well too bad, great we tried”.

      The only thing that could trip him is he himself. He has the impulse control of an 8yo with ADHD, so it’s conceivable he’d fuck up during the election campaign.

      If the CDU really gets into the government again then it’s time for every educated German to leave because things won’t get better

      The conservatives really want to help Scholz, although I highly doubt it.

      The conservatives have had a talent selecting the least favorable candidate.
