Why Austria has temporary controls with all its neighbours but Italy? (and lots of illegals arrive through Lampedusa/Sicily from Lybia)

Cyprus and Ireland are not in Schengen at all, Bulgaria and Romania are in air and sea Schengen. And temporary controls don’t mean that they are entirely closed. For example, in most borders, they only stop cars that look suspicious and, in my experience, in rail travel, I haven’t been checked at all.

There are many ways to do the controls. I don’t know how it works on the road but last time time I was travelling by train, during period of the “temporary controls” at the border station two officers walked through the train just looking for suspicious individuals which they wanted to present travel documents. No boring routine of scanning and stamping everyone’s passports.

Schengen is just another EU myth. Works on paper only.

Romania and Ireland are not the same when it comes to Schengen. Romania is part of the Schengen area for air traffic. Ireland is not part of the Schengen agreement at all.
