It’s more than a broken rung at this stage.
We’re slipping back to the 19th century and rack rent, slum landlords and absentee landlords. With a hearty does of venal Irish gouging their own.
The article is about banks refusing to lend for apartments with defects meaning cash buyers can get them at a discount. The government is going to pay for remediation for a lot of Celtic Tiger era apartments, it’s usually fire safety that has to be fixed. They should nail down the details of the scheme so that sellers can guarantee the work is going to get done. Solicitors are not going to recommend that people buy them with remediation still up in the air.
How dare banks not loan people money to buy potentially dangerous homes.
FG still ahead in the polls somehow. I seriously doubt the brains of the electorate.
My first rung is a 1 bed apartment for €215k.
It was either that or pay an extra €800 per month in rent while waiting to be able to afford a 3 bed semi.
1.5 years in and I have saved €19k (the difference in mortgage and rent payments plus what I was saving already towards a house before I bought the apartment) plus I have equity now.
I was going to step up to another rung next year but I’m happy where I am for now and will keep building the savings and if, and only if, I need to move up, I will do so then.
But buying the apartment I could afford instead of chasing a 3 bed who’s price is running away from me all the time really has changed my life.
I now realize that even though I didn’t believe it, there is actually a ladder and sometimes it’s better to get onto it than to keep reaching for a ring out of your reach.
