The Irish government should straight up solve their housing crisis, for a start.

I used to work for an english company that had 3 factories in Romania. They sold everything they produced to themselves in Netherlands and the UK and the Romanian company never produced any profits nor sold anything to include VAT. All my country got is minimum wage jobs, around 2000 of them. I don’t know why my country allows it.

Investing in the decarbonization of the energy sector would be a good start. The yearly carbon intensity of Ireland’s electricity falls behind much of Western Europe and is comparable to Bulgaria (if we look at the 2023 data).

They should Build an actual functioning military. fighter jets, radar capability, a navy capable of policing its waters, a military that can actually uphold its neutrality without it relying on others.

Just like a corporation pays dividends to shareholders, this money could be split evenly among all Irish citizens. That’s a few thousand euros per person. Let each individual decide how it should be spent for themselves rather than the government.

They never asked for this. In fact, they insisted on not wanting that money. So I’d gladly take it.

Knowing how ireland has a habit of slightly overspending on things, like the worlds most expensive bike shed that doesn’t even hold 20 bikes, aswell as the most expensive children’s hospital, I’d say €14.1b will be wasted on champagne, caviar, hookers and probably some nose snow aswell

Alternatively, give that money to Mario Draghi for his Europe plan.

We can build 41k bike shelters with that, or one more children’s hospital if we cut some corners.

Is the situation basically:
1. Ireland offer really low tax rates, attracting tech companies to the detriment of other EU countries
2. Apple/Google etc. pay less tax for years
3. The EU decides that they don’t like that, so force Ireland to take all the tax
4. Ireland gets to keep all the tax revenue for themselves
This feels a lot like Ireland have screwed everyone else for multiple years, and now they get to reap huge additional rewards for doing that? Am I missing something? It feels like the EU should at least try to force them to distribute those taxes around the EU?

IIRC the MoF indicated that some of the money will go into water, energy and housing infrastructure, some will go into the wealth funds, rest TBC.

This feels suuuuper scummy. Ireland promises apple certain tax treatments so that Apple will move its European HQ to the country, then EU says nope you actually have to pay up 14 billion in back taxes, and gives it to Ireland.
If I didn’t know any better, I’d say this was the plan all along. If there is a lesson to be had here, it’s that foreign companies can’t trust irelands word.
