La prima volta che venne operato un pacemaker impiantabile avvenne l’8 ottobre 1958 al Karolinska Institutet. Il pacemaker è stato progettato dall’inventore Rune Elmqvist e dal chirurgo Åke Senning (vedi foto) ed è durato circa 3 ore.
