According to the article in the WSJ, this guys’ strategy is actually on-point. He wants to keep supplying Ukraine to ensure Russia doesn’t gain any more territory and find a negotiated settlement that allows Ukraine to avoid being attacked again.

This is honestly a better approach than the Biden approach of slowly letting Ukraine lose. At this point, the reality is Ukraine will be in a worse point for negotiation the longer the war goes on.

Russian security guarantees? Only Trump would be arrogant enough to think Russia would honor those guarantees. So long as he’d not in office when Russia ignores those guarantees and invades for a third time he could blame whomever is in office and argue that his solution was “prefect” or “flawless.”

No, the way forward is to give Ukraine everything it needs to close its airspace, interdict Russian supply lines, push the Russian air force back far enough to prevent the use of glide bombs, destroy the physical links between Russia and Ukraine, and turn out the lights in Moscow and St Petersburg for most of the year. The damage to Putin’s reputation will either lead to his downfall, or get him to the negotiating table. Hold the talks at the Hague.

Sadly, Trump is a Putin fanboy. He’ll want to give Russia a victory of some kind and that plan has already been pushed by his campaign: surrender and appeasement.

Yes Biden is way too much of an institutionalist, and I think his memory of the Soviet Union is behind his slow roll of Ukrainian support. This was one of his biggest foreign policy mistakes. When you fight a war, you want it to be end quickly not let it drag out for years hoping the enemy runs out of equipment, arms, and personnel.

I’m having a hard time mustering up one positive thing about this guy. It looks like he doesn’t have any of the same goals as President Zelenskyy, next…

Appeasement = encouragement.

Seriously question: Can Ukraine fight Russia at the same level they are if they only have support from European countries?

On one hand, he wants peace negotiations and has a negotiating position that I consider weak (freezing current lines, no support for Ukraine in NATO). On the other, he has been vocal about wanting Ukraine in a strong position with more weapons, and that the Biden admin has insufficiently supported Ukraine.

Ignore everything American. They are unreliable. Do what needs doing, and keep on doing it.

Any ceasefire without the promise of NATO membership is self-destructive. Ukraine is already a prime example of why you never, ever give up your nukes.

Countries like Spain will continue to consider themselves buffered by NATO.

So Ruzzia will randomly push for all the land grab they can get before 1/20ish at all costs.

The presumption of Donald Trump to demand Ukraine gives up 20% of its territory.

And the misreading of Putin’s intentions and Putin’s psychological ability at this point to – in effect – capitulate to American threats is unbelievable.

“Big man” Putin – can hardly accept bending the knee to the US at this point, no matter who is President.

This is a war of attrition and we are some way yet from a train wagon in Southern France..

In all seriousness – is this position any worse than Jake Sullivan’s “escalation containment” ?

It has the virtue of saying out loud what we suspected about Sullivan’s position all along.

You think if Putin signaled before the US election that freezing of the lines of contact was on the cards that Sullivan and those who think like him wouldn’t have recommended it ?

A few rounds of fits and starts, Kellog mugged by reality, let’s see what tune Kellog is singing because, in here is the US threat to up the ante.
