      Yeah, because we’re allergic to sensible small dwellings. Proportion of those houses that aren’t or weren’t owned by the person’s parents?

      Here’s a link to the full data that tells a lot more https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/interactive-publications/housing-2023 This is a bit skewed by the fact Ireland is much less urbanised than other nearby countries where it is also high like the UK (not listed here but about 85%) and the Netherlands (79%).  If you break it down between cities/towns&suburbs/rural the only real difference between Ireland and the Netherlands is in cities but not as much as between national totals. There probably wouldn’t be any difference in the UK (generally, though Scotland would be lower).

      It’s interesting that the Netherlands is so densely populated, and still has very high proportion of houses? Is there a Dutch model of housing development Ireland could learn from? Not just on the planning side but also on the planning affordability side?

      Mainly due to how messed up our rental system is, you have groups of students & single young adults sharing entire houses because it’s the most economic way for them to rent. Ideally those properties should be let or sold to families

      More people would live in apartments here if we built apartments that were suitable for families. Suitable for families means they need storage, somewhere to put the buggy, somewhere to store the Christmas decorations for 11 months of the year, somewhere to store suitcases, somewhere to put the kids toys etc.

      Most apartments here have little to no storage and so they don’t work for families. If you’re lucky you get a cupboard to put the washing machine and coats in.

      I can easily see FFG trying to spin this as a positive, ignoring the fact that 11 people living in a 100sq m house because of their lack of apartment building is an absolutely horrible situation.
