Why would someone walk up to someone in the middle of a busy nightclub and ask them if they were Jewish unless the person was wearing something explicitly Jewish like a Yarmulke.

Not surprising. I’m Jewish and have noticed an uptick of this shite lately. I still wear my Star of David necklace, but have apparently become the resident Jew at my job to answer questions about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. I don’t have an issue with this, as Ireland has a fairly small Jewish population and images and news from the area are horrible and sad. Who wouldn’t feel a genuine human emotion?
I don’t feel unsafe, or feel any bigotry directly. Ireland is a welcoming and tolerant place, but instances like in the article should be called out for what it is. Hate is hate.
Yeah I’m sure if Jews were more explicit in their identity there would be a lot more anti semitic attacks.

Sickening, though not particularly shocking, if the frothing frenzied posts about “Zionists” (😉) on this sub reddit are anything to go by.
It’s entirely plausible that the student was attacked for anti Semitic reasons.
The fact that people immediately question a story about anti semitism is a sign of how much anti-Semitism has been hijacked and the public mislead by media stories. eg. The Amsterdam football story of antisemitism was so flawed the mayor apologised, in the US students have been filmed writing anti Semitic messages and blaming it on protesters.
The end result is that people are less and less likely to believe stories and that’s really bad for genuine cases and a great boom to actual anti Semities.
It’s a mess in short but each of us has to uphold anti racism/equality principles

Israel can be responsible for genocide, forced displacement, apartheid etc.
Both of these things can be true. One doesn’t negate the other.
I know some Hasbarists and Anti-Semites may disagree but it’s really not that hard to accept both truths at the same time.
Refusing to believe a Jewish person when they say they have experienced anti-semitism is wild.
I’ve been involved with Palestinian campaigns for years now.
The vast vast majority are good people who support Palestine for the right reasons but you (very) occasionally have a conspiracy theorist loon who shows up and thinks they can use it as a vehicle for their antisemitism. They do exist.
Israel’s attempts to weaponise antisemitism is disgusting but this doesn’t mean antisemitism doesn’t exist.
I have only one Jewish friend and he is from Brazil. No connection to Israel. He has lived here for six years and lately he is afraid to bring up the fact that he is Jewish. Constantly being questioned about genocide and what he thinks every time he opens his mouth. Reminds me of when I was young back in 90’s UK and I was constantly questioned about the IRA. The denial of anti-semetism in ireland is a real thing. I doubt very much that Muslim men in Ireland are being asked to answer for Saudi Arabia or anywhere else. I’m very aware of racism directed at Arab people in Ireland as well but we should at the very least acknowledge that being Jewish in Ireland in uncomfortable now, even if you don’t support Israel.
