Why is it surprising?
The Catholic church and Germany’s Nazi Party have a long and unpleasant history.
What’s so surprising? There’s a long tradition of religious figures supporting fascists. During the dictatorship in Portugal the Catholic Church was instrumental to the rule of Salazar.

The fact that there are less and less people alive who directly lived the nazi rise and world war 2 is a blessing and a curse.
A blessing because we have less people around advocating for such extreme ideologies and a curse because there are less people around passing on the horrors that those ideologies bear.
So we have these clueless ignorants who raise their right hands like they know what they talk about, spewing horror and racism in the name of an ideology they don’t even know anything about, just to justify their fear of change, of what they see as different, to exorcise their fears.
