      Once you realise that it’s all based on whether someone is horizontal or vertical in the tree compared to you, it’s actually pretty straightforward.

      So wait, my cousin’s child is the same thing as my grandaunt/uncle’s child? They’re both my “First Cousin Once Removed”? No wonder people find this confusing, it legitimately doesn’t make sense.

    6. We’ve always used the much easier version: Aunts’ and uncles’ children are first cousins, the relatives around your age are second cousins, and the cousins you only see at family functions are third cousins. None of these removals or outside-the-top-three levels of cousining.
