I deactivated my account because I can no longer let this stuff distract from my family and my work. The messages I have received no person should ever have to read them. Absolute lies, hatred, disgusting commentary about my appearance, character, how I am as a parent and every other inhumane thing you can imagine.”
Keoghan added that in a few cases, the harassment went beyond social media speculation. He noted that some went as far as “knocking on my granny’s door” and “sitting outside my baby boy’s house.”
Good on him. Social media is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Especially for your mental health.

I had the pleasure of working with Barry on the Banshees of Inisherin, and he was genuinely one of the friendliest people I’ve ever met.
It’s wild, because I had a negative perception of him beforehand, given the things you read online. But he always had a smile on his face, had time for everyone, whether you were a celebrity or not (unlike some others on set).
This is a guy who came from an environment of drugs, where his last memory of his mother is her knocking on the doors and windows of his grandmother’s house looking for money to buy drugs – he was orphaned at a very young age, and he has managed to escape that dark environment and become a talented actor that Ireland can be very proud of.
These people commenting have probably never met him, have no idea what is like as a person, or as a father. I can only tell you of my experience with Barry, and that’s of him being an absolute gentleman, the kind of person who buys food for all the extras at midnight when they’re cold and starving, after being on set since the early hours of the morning.
It’s great for him, he’s big enough now that he doesn’t need it whatsoever.
I know nobody really needs it but I suspect in that industry with advertising for brands and films it probably is quite important.
I’m sure he’s a nice guy, and I think he’s a good actor, but as a grown adult, I couldn’t care less if he has Instagram or not.
I feel bad that Sabrina based her full blown launch of her career off of their relationship.
She has to sing songs about them forever.
I feel bad for Barry because celebrity relationships fall under so much scrutiny they never last.
Here you have two famous individuals at the height and start of their fame, who need to focus on themselves.
The world shouldn’t throw abuse at them for taking care of themselves.

Met him a while back before a play and he was charming and friendly. This was before any huge fame.
People are shit. And they really hate to see anyone do well.
Ireland used to be a bastion for soundness for celebrities. My family loosely knows one of our more recent A listers and they cannot go to for a coffee or to their local for a pint anymore, without phones coming out for a photo. I was so disappointed to hear that. Parasocial relationships suck. It’s a job. It has good renumeration at their level, but they are still fucking human and have a right to a private life. I’m not going to go out on a limb for gormless CEOs but I sure am for a cohort of young people with incredible talent representing us so well internationally.

The curse of Irish begrudgery. A court can convict you of all sorts, but the community gossips condemn you regardless… a vicious trait and a national pass time, unfortunately.
Hopefully, he’ll rise above the begrudgers.
