Having read the paper, 8 of the 50 fractures were in the neck or head area. 4 of those were to the nasal bone/tooth, unlikely to be protected by a standard cycling helmet.
Injuries from car crashes that end up in hospital probably have a significantly higher incidence of head injuries but no one calls for mandatory helmets. The other finding from this paper that’s not mentioned. 22% of the injuries were causing by collisions with cars which seems like a much more significant issue than helmet wearing
A driver rear-ended me when I was cycling, causing a back injury. The first thing the doctor asked me was whether I was wearing a helmet despite no head injury. Our obsessions with helmet use is an unhelpful distraction from the real causes of injuries to vulnerable road users.
