How high is your consumption? Without the raw numbers nobody can tell you if you pay to much or not.

    3. If it’s any consolation, I’m grappling with a 4.600 EUR gas bill from Nov 2022 (when I moved in) to May last year. Granted it’s a large house, but I lived alone then and spent every week day away from home from 7am – 7pm. I shut off everything before leaving home, didn’t even have a kitchen until March. Now the gas company wants over 800 EUR payments each month. I managed to bring the monthly payments to around 500 EUR on their website. This is crazy. I plan to move to a new supplier once everything is paid off. Current one is basic supplier.

      >We moved mid December in 2022 and got 450 bill for water and the heater consumption of 2 weeks. Seems insane, but mieterverein said it was “normal” due to circumstances in Europe.

I do not live in big city, but 2 weeks for 450 euros ?!

I pay like 50 a month for electricity, and 50 for gas.
Water is included on my Nebenkost, and total nebenkost is around €100, and every year they give me money back.
And i do NOT spare on water.

Household of 2, but we take long baths, i do dishes in the machine daily too.

Keep an eye on your account, read your meters once a month and check whether your monthly payment is covering your usage. All providers I’ve ever been a customer at allowed you to adapt your monthly payment according to your monthly readings. Once that’s settled you can switch to checking the meters every 6 months or so.

And most importantly: switch providers on a regular basis. Grundversorgung is expensive as hell and even new contracts can get expensive once the price guarantee for 12/24 months runs out.

might be normal, might not be.

are we talking electricity or gas here? how high is your consumption? are you keeping track of it?

Another consolation, I’ve recently settled the heating costs of €5k with my landlord for 2022. I rarely used heating, was even out for 3 months in the winter with everything off. I live alone, had mieterverein look at the issue, and they basically said, there’s no way to track it monthly, and if the bill is generated, it needs to be paid. Also added, a lot of people are getting high bills, so it’s unfortunately normal. 0 transparency, stupid rules.
