I really don’t understand the announcing weapons and weapon deliveries that seems to happen. Surely you should not be letting the enemy know your capabilities.
Now we just need to attach lasers to some ill-tempered sea bass and take out the remainder of Russiaโs Black Sea fleet.

The appeal of a laser system is that as long as you can track the target and it’s in range, you can hit it; a burst at the speed of light is functionally impossible to dodge, outrun, or deploy physical countermeasures against. The issue has always been range, because energy drops off geometrically as range increases. That’s just physics, and we should be glad of it, because the sun at a mere 147 million km from Earth would fry this planet to a cinder if energy only decreased linearly with range.
So the real issue here is the 2 km altitude (and that very well might mean 2 km straight up, meaning the range is 2 km total). The Russian planes lobbing glide bombs at Ukrainian cities and frontline positions are *much* farther off than that. I’m not sure if a 2 km range would even be that much good at stopping the bombs themselves, though it might be possible to track one well before it came within 2 km and then hit it as soon as it was within range. The issue at that point would become cycling/cooldown and whether a 2 km-range laser point defense system could actually fire enough times in short succession to make the short range less of an issue. But we’re probably not even at the point of being able to have that conversation in any kind of mission-relevant way yet.

you dont need a lazer that can cut at that distance to down a drone, you can just use a high powered lazer to destroy the optics and blind it

We’ve had that on naval ships but they’re not as effective as you think. They will work but that can easily be dealth with using reflective shielding

Having Laser Dome around cities and energy plants and factories, that would turn the tables. But you would need thousands I’m afraid. No matter what, this is a good defensive development.

Ngl, I wish this stuff didn’t get announced, but instead, Russian planes just started falling out of the sky. “Unveiling” it just comes across as showing off a proof of concept that can do something under controlled test conditions but is nowhere close to production ready, let alone ready for tactical use.

I can’t believe that the world is again innovating weapons at the pace of WWI and WWII. Just a few years ago it seemed that there was no need to come up with any new weapons once you have nuclear bomb and that nations with nuclear weapons can help prevent wars. but it seems now that all of the nuclear arsenal of ALL countries is pretty much useless, because it’s not preventing any wars and east of Ukraine already looks like 100 atomic bombs have been dropped there.

Letting this war go on and on is allowing both the Russians and Ukrainians come up with technology that will forever change the way people conduct war and new ways to create terror. I wish the West would have given all the support Ukraine needed early on.. harder sanctions and every weapon they desired.
