The comments coming out of this meeting are just maddening.
Firstly most of the ministers are sidestepping the stolen election like they’re still waiting for results when it was the most widely observed election in European history and all those reports are available to read now. Apparently Georgia is standing out in the cold fighting for its democracy these last 2 months while most of the EU foreign ministers haven’t been able to figure out time to do a bit of basic research. .
Secondly there’s a persisent naive belief that GD have some earnest intention of ever joining the EU that can be bridged with dialogue. They just don’t get that the fundamental goal of their high level policy is specifically to prevent EU integration ever happening, whether it’s with dignity or conservative values or in 2028 or ever. They’re being played like fools and both GD and Moscow will be popping champagne corks over this outcome.

Fuck Hungary. Peter Magyar can’t come soon enough. One rogue state and the entire bloc’s integrity is compromised. Visa restrictions on diplo passports is a good step though – much more sensible than a blanket withdrawal of visa liberalization. But at this rate it could take months for something like that to happen. I wonder if the Biden administration will manage to get out a sanctions package in the next month. Depending on how well the State Department is coordinating with the incoming team (and how inclined the incoming team is to actually pursue the sanctions policy) it could actually have a stronger effect if it comes directly from the Trump administration, but again, they are going to be busy with so much stupid shit as they get going it could still take months before any reasonable action is taken. We are effectively on our own.
One piece of news to read between the lines with – it was today reported that Gharibashvili’s son who had been studying at the University of Pennsylvania withdrew from his studies there and will plan to continue his studies in Tbilisi. This could indicate that top GD officials like Gharibashvili expect a harsh sanctions package from the USA within the course of the next academic term, which will affect the visas of the family members of those top officials. This could also have something to do with the rumors of a physical confrontation in GD leadership and Gharibashvili’s mysterious trip to the hospital last week.)

Hungary needs to be expelled from the EU tbh. Europe’s biggest beggar, constantly asking for money but doing absolutely nothing that could even remotely benefit the EU. Fuck them, honestly

As a European, these years of total paralysis and lack of will to step up and do its part on the EU side made it clear to me that even though the people of Georgia (and of Ukraine, Moldova and Belarus) totally deserve to be European citizens, the European Union is definitely not worthy of them.
