Nicușor Dan officially announced, in a press conference held on Monday evening at the Capital City Hall, his intention to run independently in the 2025 presidential elections and that he is open to discussions with pro-European parties. G4Media wrote exclusively on Monday morning that the mayor-general will soon announce his independent candidacy in the presidential elections. G4Media broadcast LIVE the mayor’s most important statements.
Nicușor Dan specified what, in his opinion, are the three big problems that Romania has and where the role of the president is important:
Corruption and the functioning of institutions
Romania has no direction today
Romania is divided into socio-cultural categories that are in opposition to each other
“There are entire areas captured by interest groups. They act in the interest of the gang and not in the public interest. It will be a tough fight between those who defend the public interest and those who defend the interest of the gang.”
It will be a struggle that will involve administrative mechanisms, the need for political cohesion, and justice.
“These are the essential attributes that the president must have. To master administrative mechanisms, to be able to negotiate political agreements and to understand legal mechanisms very well,” emphasized Nicușor Dan.
“These attributes led me to make today’s announcement.”

For anyone wondering, he is an International Math Olympiad super-genius (one of the few people to have solved the “legendary” problem 6 of [IMO 1988](https://www.imo-official.org/year_individual_r.aspx?year=1988), having ranked well compared to future Fields medal laureates), is a long-time activist for saving the cultural heritage of Bucharest, has zero tolerance for corruption and is doing a tremendous job as the General Mayor of Bucharest.
He would most probably make a great president, but I’d be sad to not see him finish implementing the amazing vision he has for Bucharest.
Cel mai mare defect al nației noastre, n avem limită, nu știm când să ne oprim și ne credem buricul pământului. Se spameaza r/europe cu știri din România, sunt sătui ăștia. Mai luați băi o pauză.
Some people are fighting in the comments, in Romanian language, arguing it is stupid to post such information on this Reddit page. “Why would they care?”, “But there are Romanians on this page also.”, “Do you know anything about Lisbon’s mayor?” – he is Bucharest’s mayor. 😂😂😂
Anyway, for some of us (pro-democracy) this is a good news. He is a decent guy, fighting corruption left and right, a reformer, maybe a bit too introvert for a political career. Overall, I am going to vote for him, without feeling uncomfortable (as I felt voting for Lasconi – the other main pro-democracy candidate) and without asking too many questions – the man has already proven that he is a great politician (by the way, he is a mathematician – and I think that is cool 😎).

Nicusor, for people that don’t know him, won twice the gold medal for math in world olympics. He had a PhD in Maths at PhD in mathematics at Paris 13 University and worked as a researcher for a short time. He decided to come back to Romania because he wanted to change things.
He started building a grass-movement, ran a number of times for mayor of Bucharest and founded USR (Union for the Salvation of Romania) which is the largest reformist party in Romania.
Since 2020 he has been the mayor of Bucharest. He took over a city that lacked in any real progress for a number of years, growing pollution, the public transportation system was old and failing, the centeal heating system was failing hard… and the finances were in shambles.
In just 4 years, he managed to restructure our finances, get a lot of European funds and projects to rebuild our infrastructure, get new trams and busses, and rework the system… and a lot of people have had heat in their homes for the first time in years.
On top of all, he had no scandals. Avoided attacking PSD unless pressed on a specific subject and never blamed the previous mayors. He won his 2nd term by a landslide, more than twice the votes compared to the second candidate.
I have to say I was a doubter at first, a lot of people were disappointed in his first two years as mayor, but he kept on working and turned things around. He would be an excellent mayor and a blueprint for anyone that combats extremism and keep Europe on track.
Good luck.
so sorry if I’m too behind on the news, but are you guys just going to have elections in 2025 and pretend the ones this year didn’t happen, after the court said they were invalid? Is the tiktok guy allowed to run again?
Why is this posted here?
I think he can win, but I reckon Bucharest will be worse is without him
as a nd voter this is insane!!
