“In an interview with the public radio last Friday, Viktor Orbán threatened to veto the EU budget over Hungary’s frozen funds, and said that making the remaining frozen funds available would be a post-2026 problem.

The problem with this tactic is that a decision on the seven-year budget is not expected for a long time, while deadlines that could mean the loss of huge amounts of funding are about to expire. Hungary stands to lose more than 400 billion forints within weeks, and even the theoretical chance of avoiding this is close to zero …”

Come on, Hungarians, just put him on a plane to Moscow already.

I’m all for helping EU nations grow prosperous together, but the sense of entitlement by Orban for ultimately tax money from another country is just… off putting.

Any pro-Orban Hungarian out here? Just talk. I will listen. No downvotes I promise

    5. Haxemply on

Just don’t give in to his threats! He can’t leave the EU because the Hungarian population is decisivly pro-EU, so all he can do is throw a tantrum while his whole system is starting to crumble. Keep squeezing his balls till they bust. In fact, squeeze him even harder till the next elections! Don’t give him any room to maneuver.

Why we can’t suspend Hungary from voting whole Orban is is power because this country obviously is working against EU interest. Don’t need to mention that there is war going on in Europe.

      **TLDR SUMMARY**

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has threatened to veto the next EU budget unless Hungary’s frozen EU funds are released. While this tactic aims at long-term negotiations, Hungary risks losing over €1 billion in unspent EU funds by the end of 2024 due to unmet conditions.

The EU has blocked Hungary’s access to billions in recovery and cohesion funds because of violations of the rule of law and insufficient reforms, particularly concerning public trust foundations and judicial measures. Orbán claims that Hungary can manage until 2026, but critical deadlines for accessing recovery funds expire in August 2026. Failure to meet milestones could lead to the loss of significant amounts of funding.

The government’s slow progress and confrontational stance may put Hungary in a worse position. Orbán’s insistence on tying future budget approval to the release of withheld funds intensifies his antagonistic approach to EU institutions.

But why does he need Europe’s money? I though all those billions coming in from China for 2 factories will solve all Hungary’s problems?

There is a simple but at the same time painful plan to impeach him once for good. Instruct the ECB to gradually reduce funding or impose sanctions to Hungarian banks with close ties to his regime and its rogue plans. As a result, its oligarchs won’t be able to finance themselves, thus leaving him without protection.

    13. daRagnacuddler on

I think our reaction to Orbán is way too soft.

If Hungary can just hijack the political process of EU institutions, why can’t we just do the same with Hungary? It’s not even about ‘do we spend X for Y’, it’s straight about a corrupt regime that larps the fifth Collum for russian destabilization efforts. It’s not about a specific policy we argue about, it’s about really basic stuff we shouldn’t have to consider.

Ok little dictator, we will unfreeze the money. But Germany won’t pay a Cent for EU funds until all our conditions are fully achieved.

‘When they go low, we go high’ never works. If they play dirty, remember them that we could just destroy his network and Hungary’s financial stability in an instant if we would play like he does.

    14. Hmm
If a country vetoes the EU budget, A provisional budget is applied
If no new budget is approved before the current one expires, a provisional budget is applied under Article 315 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU). This allows the Union to operate on monthly budget allocations based on the previous year’s budget. This can negatively affect new programs and projects, as they may not receive funding.

Poland and Hungary threatened in 2020 to block the long-term budget and recovery fund (2021–2027) because they opposed a mechanism linking EU funds to the rule of law. This led to prolonged negotiations and a temporary political deadlock before a compromise was reached.

So the EU will still work?

    15. araujoms on

The rule of law conditionality regulation was pure genius. Instead of suspending voting rights for the wannabe dictatorships – which was a dramatic, complex process that never happened – they got their funding cut instead. Which seems to be a strong motivator for them to clean up their act, as shown by the fall of PiS in Poland and the dire state of Orbán in the polls.

    16. Those billions usually go directly into the pockets of Orban and his oligarch cronies, so that’s a problem.

    17. Durumbuzafeju on

Post-2026 problem meaning he will lose the elections in 2026.

    18. RupsjeNooitgenoeg on

Every time the EU or NATO needs to get anything important done we have to beg, grovel and bribe Orban first. It’s getting ridiculous. Wish we could just kick him out. Hungarians are more than welcome to return when they have more rational leadership of course, but this isn’t working.

    19. MartianInTheDark on

This is how you slowly get a country out of the EU as the president. You keep vetoing every single thing, and you obviously lose EU money. Then you will say that the EU is useless cause it doesn’t give you anything in return (for doing nothing), and your people will vote to leave the EU.

    20. Black_and_Purple on

Man, that’s gonna be so tragic if Hungary is gonna get kicked out of the EU because of shit like that.

    21. brezhnervous on

So he really wants to lose that €8bn/yr EU aid money which pays for Hungary’s social programs? (Or at least some of it does lol)

    22. Undernown on

So you don’t wanna vote for the budget? Ok, we’ll leave your name out of the budget so you don’t have to vote for it!

    24. wordswillneverhurtme on

EU needs to reform its rules. One nation vetoing everything is becoming absurd.
