Probably because people cant drive for shit and treat cyclists like shit

Cyclists without helmets should be fined, just as drivers are fined for not using seat belts.
I saw 2 bicycle accidents last year, cyclist got up after so not injured too badly thankfully, but both were at traffic lights where the cyclist was running the red and hit a car coming through.
I ride a motorbike, so in a fairly impartial position.
50% of cyclists have a death wish, and that from somebody who rides a motorcycle!
A large percentage of cyclists have very little spatial awareness and in truth should not be cycling in such a dangerous environment.
A huge amount of car drivers are on the phone, which I can clearly see as I overtake lines of moving traffic on the driver’s side.
This combination is literally lethal.

This will get downvoted into oblivion, but the number of cyclists that are the cause of their own injuries due to running red lights, etc, is ridiculous.
To further compound that the number of cyclists who don’t even use basic safety gear of helmets or in the middle of winter, not using lights or other hi vis clothing is very high. I came off my bike at speed once, and my helmet was mangled (but it did its job and protected my head)
And yes, there are also those drivers out there who are oblivious to other cars, let alone cyclists
What a worthless headline. Is it up, is it down? How does it compare to modal share? There were 7,302 injuries in 2022 and 6198 in 2021. So are they saying 1000 per annum or 1/7th of all injuries? This might not be that far from modal share.
Came around a corner today and was facing a probably drunk idiot crossing the road on a bike , dark clothes and no lights.
Can believe these stats.
The cycling infrastructure in Ireland is of extremely poor quality:
* Cycle lanes suddenly ending
* Poor line of sight on roads to better alert drivers to cyclists
* Kerbs constantly linking up too short for cyclists to be constantly going from the road to the footpath as intended by the cycle route
* Cycle lanes sharing space with bus lanes
* Lack of traffic lights centred around cyclists
* Shared roads that have speed limits over 30km/hr
* Cyclists lack priority over drivers on roads below 30km/hr
* No visual aids like coloured tarmac to indicate roads where cyclists have priority over drivers.
Problem is the govt have decided it’s entirely the responsibility of the driver to watch out for cyclists (while driving a car) and the cyclist to watch out for themselves (while cycling a bike) rather than taking the action to correctly build these roads. It’s an excessively silly method that’s causing far too much damage and no accountability by FF/FG politicians half-assing this.
