The EU said Monday it had finalized plans to build a €10.6 billion ($11.1 billion) satellite network that will take on SpaceX’s Starlink. The bloc said the Iris² satellite constellation will include 290 satellites in low and medium-Earth orbit, with the service expected to be up and running by 2030.
European politicians have previously expressed concerns about the dangers of becoming overly reliant on Starlink.

IRIS2 is not a Starlink rival nor is it an attempt to take on Elon Musk
A day late and a dollar short.
290 is a laughable number. Maybe it’ll be enough to service only Europe (big if since more satellites in the constellation means more uptimes, more bandwidth due to load sharing, more reliability, etc). But worldwide? There’s no rival to Starlink. You can get internet in the middle of the ocean with Starlink.
Wow those 290 Satellites sound like great competition for Starlink’s 7,000 satellites. All this is meant to do is prevent governmental and security functions from relying on Starlink. It doesn’t compete commercially at all.
Great news! You don’t want to be dependent on someone like Musk, plus Europe is in dire need of some innovative projects to keep up with the USA.
