“Yesterday (Thursday – ed.) evening, we decided with the Commander of the Defence Forces that we will launch a naval operation early this morning, where the Estonian Navy vessel “Raju” has already set out by this time (the interview was broadcast at 8.15 – ed.) to protect Estlink 1. So that nothing happens there and that our critical connection with Finland remains intact,” said Defence Minister Hanno Pevkur on Friday’s “Vikerhommiku”( Estonianmorning radio sbow).

According to the Minister of Defense, after yesterday’s Estonian government session, he immediately communicated with the Finnish Minister of Defense and proposed to him that Estonia and Finland could jointly secure Estlink 1.

“But not just with Finland, but actually with all allies. The Finns are discussing this today and I believe they will come with us. Secondly, we agreed yesterday that NATO will also communicate at the military level. That the Commander of the Defence Forces will call the Supreme Allied Commander Europe today.”

According to Pevkur, the next step is a military-tactical question, and perhaps there is no need to discuss whether this is Article 4 consultations or the conclusion of bilateral agreements.

“For us, speed is important. And if common ground is found between SACUER ( Supreme Allied Commander Europe) and the Commander of the Defence Forces, then the solution could be that Sweden comes here to help us. Or Germany comes or Poland comes or whoever. That we find faster solutions as bilateral relations than NATO as a whole.””
